Ask an expert: Let’s talk… feet…

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 13 - 2013

No, really!  You see, I’ve been taking mine for granted.

The weather has been lovely hasn’t it?  I’ve been blissfully ignoring the fact that in less than 6-months time, thanks to my Raynaud’s, I’ll be grimacing at the big freeze that numbs my toes… making each step ironically burn with the cold.

So, why have I been reminded of this so prematurely?  Well, a few weeks ago, I managed to do myself a mischief thanks to a pair of wholly unsuitable shoes and a streetful of cobbles.  I didn’t even know I’d done it… but as the week progressed, it became more and more painful to put one of my feet to the ground.

1215934_54195993

“What could it be?!”  I asked everyone around me…

Eventually, I spoke to a doctor who decided that it sounded like Plantar Fasciitis.  That’s easy for him to say… I can’t pronounce it!  What it meant was that I’d “angered” the band of connective tissue that runs between the ball of the foot and the heel.  Effectively, that bit under the arch.  It got me thinking about just how serious a podiatry problem can be, how fully it can impact your day-to-day life, and how we just don’t really like to talk about our feet!

Well, let’s break that taboo today.

Got bunions before your time?  Thought it was only your Mum who needed corn plasters?  Calluses best described as barnacles?

The thing is… foot problems are often associated with the elderly.  My local surgery has a visiting chiropodist who comes on a Wednesday afternoon… the waiting room is FULL of lovely nana’s queueing up to have their feet checked.  I don’t know anyone under the age of 70 who regularly visits a podiatrist to have treatment, but I know plenty of people who should.

Well, let’s change that.

If you have any foot-related questions, leave a comment below and I’ll send them to leading podiatrist, Dr. Tariq Khan who works with Carnation footcare.  Follow-up post coming soon!

Pick your own!

I haven’t been strawberry picking since I was a small child, no doubt eating far more as I went along than ever made it into the basket.  In fact, I remember it being so much fun, I don’t know why it never occurred to me until now to take Leila, she’s an absolute fruit fiend (having hated vegetables from day one) and loves to feel “in control” of preparing her food.  A match made in heaven.

As far as I’m aware, there’s only really one major strawberry picking field left near us… we used to have one just down the road from my old house but it got carved up and used as a car boot field many years ago.  If you’ve never tasted pick-your-own strawberries, you’re truly missing out.  Sweeter, juicier, and far more tasty than the bland versions the supermarkets stock… they’re an absolute joy.

Inexpensive Beauty Find: H&M Wintersky Nail Polish

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 12 - 2013

Loves me a good duochrome I do!

The problem with some duochromes is that no matter how delightfully galactic they look in the bottle, once on the nail… they require about a billion coats before reaching full opacity.  I mean, I know that I’ll have some extra time on my hands once Leila starts school in September (oh God, I’m not ready) but, five fucking coats is pushing it somewhat, no?

And that my friends, is why you need this H&M cheapie in your lives…

H&M Wintersky

H&M Wintersky

H&M Wintersky is a swoon-worthy polish.  It looks like it’s majorly accentuating my nail ridges in the second photo… but it’s quite an unkind photo to this poor polish which applies beautifully in just. two. coats.  The brush has a tendency to overload so you do have to be careful to scrape the excess back into the bottle but the formula is one of the fastest-drying (without making any application sacrifices) that I’ve yet to encounter.  Fastest-drying yet.  It’s like pixie-pee or something.

You should be able to tell from the photos that the duochrome shifts from a silvery green/blue to pink/lilac gorgeousness.  I’m also not wearing a top-coat in these shots because I was having a major swatch-session.

H&M Wintersky is currently available in H&M stores… it’s also online (if you can navigate their abomination of a website).  Priced at £2.99, it’s worth picking up next time you’re instore.

The Lipstick League – week of 5.8.13

Question of the Week – Have you ever had your makeup done by a professional makeup artist? If so, tell us a bit about the experience(s).

lipstickleague - final

Answer: – Yes!  I’ve been extremely fortunate and have had my makeup done by some very talented professionals.  My favourites have included Cesar Santos for Giorgio Armani and David Scheffen for NARS who both blew me away by teaching me some cheeky little techniques to suit my particular colouring/face shape that I’ve since used to improve my makeup application 100%.

My Beauty Bunny – They say living well is the best revenge – and your nails will be living in style when painted with a polish from NCLA’s Sweet Revenge Collection. Come take a peek!

Nouveau Cheap – Drugstore polishes that look like Vintage Leather on the nail? Yep, and they’re from Maybelline!

Pink Sith – Needs more nail polish like a squirrel needs a can opener, but that didn’t stop her from picking up the latest Urban Decay Nail Polishes in Addiction and Vice.

Prime Beauty – was gobsmacked when she had the opportunity to have her hair styled by big-time British celebrity hairdresser Mark Hill. Mark has crossed the pond and launched his salon professional line in Walgreen’s!

Phyrra – shares the best CC Cream with you; It Cosmetics Anti-Aging Full Coverage Physical SPF 50 CC Cream. And it comes in 5 shades!

Vampy Varnish – shows you the latest and greatest Zoya collection called Cashmeres and Satins for fall 2013.

we heart this – loved the Benefit The Rich is Back palette at $34, but did you know it was just marked down to $24? It’s a beautiful deal!

Beauty Junkies Unite – See which lippies were hits, and those that were misses in the new MAC So Supreme Lipcolor Collection!

Clumps of Mascara – is hosting a giveaway where you could possibly win a $125 Visa gift card. Sounds pretty groovy, huh?

Glitter Gal Hot Chilli Holographic NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 7 - 2013

If you follow my new tumblr account, you would have seen this particular beauty pop up on there last week. When I challenged you to guess the shade from the swatch most of you said China Glaze Ruby Pumps… well, you were wrong! Glitter Gal Hot Chilli is just as sparkle-tastic but with the added bonus of some major holographic loveliness.

Non-gritty and richly-pigmented, the warm slightly wine-y base will be perfect for autumn and has enough of a jelly type of quality to make it look all squishy and scrummy on the nails.

glitter-gal-hot-chilli-bottle-web

Application was a dream, two easy coats later and the colour is fully opaque with a strong holographic effect in sunlight. In my experience, the Aussie-based brand (now available in the UK exclusively at PowderRooms) has always made some of the most beautiful holographic reds available and this one is no exception.

glitter-gal-hot-chilli-web

Glitter Gal Hot Chilli is priced at £10 for 10ml and is available to buy online at powderrooms.com, this one’s a limited edition shade so if you want to get it in your collection in time for Autumn, be quick!

No7 ditches the airbrush to celebrate natural beauty

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 6 - 2013

A couple of months ago, Boots No7 asked me if I’d like to have a sneak peek at the creation of their new Autumn campaign. Different to most other campaigns from the beauty industry, No7 were keen to strengthen their pledge to ban the use of airbrushing and digital retouching in their campaigns.

The campaign is a two-parter… featuring both print and television. From Thursday, you’ll be able to see the finished TV ad on your screens. An ad which features real women, cast straight from the high-street. There are no professional models, no cheesy story-lines, and NO digital trickery. Just good makeup, great lighting, and some natural beauties relishing their Ta-Dah! moment. Trust me, I saw it all go down!

IMG_0168

Creating the backdrops for the shoots – YES! They used actual No7 makeup!

IMG_0179

Wardrobe department, who knew how hard it was to match your clothes to your makeup?!

IMG_0187

Hello my pretties!

IMG_0188

Got foundation?

IMG_0191

I got the full experience too!

IMG_0176

Sneaking a peek at the shots as they came straight off the camera

As you can imagine, when you’re shooting a campaign which celebrates the ability of makeup to enhance natural beauty without any digital intervention, it’s pretty important that your makeup artist is at the top of their game and Boots No7 enlisted the expert eye of Petros Petrohilos to safely steer them through the minefield of mascara smudges, lipstick-on-teeth disasters, and rogue blemishes. I was amazed at his meticulous attitude to creating the perfect red lip, it was quite something to behold!

Nails were looked after by Rock Beauty creative director (and he of Adele’s Louboutin manicure fame) Mike Pocock… while hair was teased into perfection by New Bond Street super-star, Neil Cornelius. Don’t let his destitute demeanour fool you, this man has bonafide magic fingers.

As for the man behind the camera, well… Boots No7 did something rather clever in their selection of who best to represent their idea of beauty. Abandoning the classic choice of a fashion photographer, the team behind the campaign took a braver route… calling up on the skills of eminent portrait photographer James Mollinson to interpret the essence of the women infront of the lens.

James is well-known for his travelling exploits (there’s a wonderful feature on him that you should watch, here), capturing subjects from across the globe and in this role, his aim was to portray each woman’s “Ta-Dah!” moment. That sense of satisfaction we all feel when our efforts at beautifying ourselves have been successful! Whether it’s the boost of confidence, the spring in our step, or just the knowledge that we won’t scare the children, the “ta-dah!” moment is something I think we can all empathise with.

I’ve got an exclusive preview on the print images below… how do you think James did with capturing these beautiful ladies?

blue-model-1

coral-model-1

gold-model-1

red-model-1

Aren’t they stunning? What do you think? Do these shots speak “portrait” more than “beauty shoot” to you? I love how the backdrops tone perfectly with the makeup.

The second part of the campaign involved creating a TV ad. The creative agency called upon director Ian Bonhôte to translate the campaign to the moving image and once again, I was invited along to skulk around in the background, soaking up the atmosphere. The studios in North London were hot. Hotter than hell thanks to last month’s heatwave and although I didn’t arrive until mid-afternoon, the crew had been there since 6am with the day still stretching out well ahead of them.

I sneaked a peek of the storyboard which, as you can see (below), mirrors the print campaign in terms of “model” and backdrop… again, there’s nothing fancy here. Just great makeup on great faces. Continuity was key and with extreme closeups of eyes and lips, the camera had to be operated by remote control… even the tiniest of nudges would have ruined the focus and the entire shot!

Concentration was paramount and from an observer’s point of view, it looked like a well-oiled machine, capturing and arranging shots that would only later make sense once placed into the right sequences. Well-organised chaos would be another term for it!

I haven’t seen the finished advert yet (which will air from tomorrow on Boot’s Facebook page and on TV on Thursday) but I’m excited to see how it all comes together.

Urban Decay Autumn 2013 Nail Colour – Vice

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 5 - 2013

Have I told you before that Urban Decay were one of the first brands that made me sit up and take a proper interest in nail polish? Remember some of those early polishes… I still have a bottle of Cult and O somewhere, such a gorgeous pink!

Anyway, reminiscing aside… Urban Decay have been lightly dabbling with the (re)creation of nail polishes via some lovely mini-sets these past few years but this Autumn sees the return of full-size bottles.

Well, I say Autumn… they’re actually live on BeautyBay.com and the Debenhams website as I type.  The brand will be looking to release two limited edition shades each season, and I’ve got one of Autumn’s offerings on the blog today for your swatch-swooning pleasure!

Urban Decay Autumn 2013 Nail Polish Vice Purple (2)

Vice, one of the two limited edition shades available with their skull-topped bottles, is a rich purple with a not-so-hidden red/blue shimmer.  It’s not as duochrome as the stock images might have you believe but it is a deeply sexy royal purple with that inner glow of gorgeousness that darkens at the edges.  I’ve included a macro shot below to give you a better idea of how the polish reflects the light.

Urban Decay Autumn 2013 Nail Polish Vice Purple

The 3-three formula is bloody faultless, practically a one coater though I always do two when my nails are under swatch-scrutiny!  The polish glides on smoothly and dries quickly to a high shine, I’m not wearing a top coat in the above pictures.

If you’re in the market for a stunning purple, you’d be hard pushed to find better on the market at the moment.

Urban Decay Nail Colour in Vice is priced at £10 and available to buy online from beautybay.com and instore/online at debenhams.com

The Lipstick League – 29.7.13

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 4 - 2013

Question of the Week – Is there a beauty trend that is “out” that you wish were “in”? If so, what is it?

lipstickleague - final

Answer – I really don’t follow trends that much. I suppose I’ve always longed for holographic nail polishes to hit the big time and have their day on the high-street… that hasn’t happened in the UK yet.

Lipglossiping – desperately wanted to love her new Lime Crime Velvetine but when lip and velvet met, things didn’t stay pretty for long!

My Beauty Bunny – Looking for a great post-workout towelette? We’ve got the details on Yogi Wipes – a cruelty-free choice that cleanses, refreshes and nourishes skin.

Nouveau Cheap – Claire’s can be fun for an inexpensive jewelry fix, but did you know they also sell macaroni & cheese and french fry-flavored lip balms? I reviewed them both, if you’re curious (you know you are).

Pink Sith – wants to show you the two new nail polishes from the NARS Fall 2013 collection, but fears you may label her nail art as a pinterest fail.

Phyrra – says it’s time to rejoice! New Sugarpill Sparkle Baby and Cold Chemistry is coming soon. See her swatches & tutorials.

Vampy Varnish – butter LONDON has something new out and it’s not nail lacquer…it’s the butter LONDON Bespoke Colour Collectionand there are some great items!

we heart this – is not sending you to their site this week. They’re sending you over to Makeup and Beauty Blog, where the lovely Karen featured them in her new series This is My Makeup Life.

Beauty Junkies Unite – Explore your more rebellious side with Too Faced’s new Pretty Rebel Eyeshadow Palette for fall!

Clumps of Mascara – Time for updates of the world’s favorite baby! Or at least everyone’s favorite baby on THIS blog. Elle Belle turns 6 months old!

EauMG – Don’t just eat your veggies but smell like them too. Seriously. Victoria reviews Honoré des Prés I Love Les Carottes perfume.

Gouldylox Reviews – Win an entire skincare line for mature skin!

Guest Post of the Week, as chosen by Lipglossiping – The lovely Paris from My Women Stuff questions whether Beauty Box Subscriptions have had their day. Has the beauty box bubble finally burst?

My Ultimate Summer Driving Playlist *SP

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 3 - 2013

I’m just about to disappear again on another little unplanned break away for a few days, Mr L suggested that we should perhaps make the most of this last month before Leila starts school so we’ve booked a ferry over to the Isle of Wight on Tuesday, somewhere that despite living on its doorstep for the last 32 years, I’ve only visited twice… both of which for work-related reasons!

We’ll be taking in the sights of the Island and I’ve booked a few nights in a guest house near Ventnor.  I’m hoping that this wonderful weather will continue for another week and not turn on us just as we jump on the ferry!

What is it about the beautiful weather that makes driving so much more pleasurable?  There’s nothing quite like driving through the countryside with the windows down, enjoying some of your most favourite tunes.  Moneysupermarket.com contacted me a couple of weeks ago with an opportunity to share my Ultimate Summer Driving Playlist and take part in their blogger competition for the chance to win a 32gb iPad.  To be honest, I was chomping at the bit for any excuse to fire up spotify and spend an evening arguing debating with Mr L over what constitutes a great driving song!

1. Elton John – Tiny Dancer
2. Beta Band – Dry The Rain
3. Sugababes – Freak Like Me
4. Primal Scream – Loaded
5. Belly – Now They’ll Sleep
6. Eels – Mr E’s Beautiful Blues
7. Teenage Fanclub – Sparky’s Dream
8. Blondie – Union City Blues
9. Garbage – I Think I’m Paranoid
10. Stranglers – Always The Sun

Unlike many compilation albums would have you believe, a good driving song has nothing to do with cheesy lyrics about hitting the road and everything to do with heavy bass-lines, anthemic choruses, and spirit-rousing sing-a-long bits!  The ten listed in the You Tube playlist above have been on my car stereo this Summer… but do you agree with any of them?

If you want to get involved in the conversation, the twitter hashtag is #UltimateDrivingPlaylist

C’mon… before the sun disappears for another year, gimme your top driving tunes!

Rose Gold FOTD and my current favourite foundation!

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 2 - 2013

I love wearing warm colours on my cool skintone.  They impart a sense of vitality and freshness that I just don’t get from my more traditional cool-toned favourites.  It can be tricky to paint a “cool” face with “warm” colours and unless you’re also blessed with plenty of freckles and red hair, there can be an immediate juxtaposition between face and hair/face and makeup.  I must admit that I generally only go for a warm face when I’m having a good skin day (which I wasn’t!).  The creamier my complexion (read: less ruddy), the more success I have with painting a warmer canvas.

When I first started wearing makeup, I adored all warm-toned eyeshadows… gold being the pinnacle of that adoration.  Infact, I still have so many beautiful gilded shades that just don’t see much love because as I’ve gotten older, the redness in my complexion has increased and I’m less concerned about making my blue/green eyes “pop” against the shadow and more concerned about not looking like I have a drinking problem.

I find that nowadays, if I do go for a wamer look, I tend to stick to soft peaches (never apricot), guavas, and rose-gold.  Anything that has a slightly pink base is a winner… it can be shot through with a ton of golden sparkle just so long as it has that complimentary base.  Orange and brown-toned golds rarely wear well though I love a good champagne-gold (think NARS Albatross/MAC Femme-Fi).

Rose Gold FOTD

I’m completely in love with Boots No7 Stay Perfect Foundation* (I’m shade Calico – link) at the moment.  I’m a late-comer to this one and assumed that it would be too drying on my combo/dry and dehydrated skin… most things that claim any kind of longevity, usually are.  I find that aslong as I’m well-moisturised (which I always am anyway), I can wear this one without exacerbating any flakiness.  I haven’t tried it in the Winter yet… but I’ve been wearing this around 70% of the time since mid-June and it delivers a confidence-boosting super-smooth look if I wear it with a primer underneath. I didn’t wear a primer in the photos below because it was ridiculously hot yesterday and I just wasn’t up for all those layers!

One of the reasons that I’m loving it (and it seems like the faintest of praise) is down to the simple fact that the pump dispenses exactly the perfect amount.  Do not underestimate the power that getting the right amount of coverage can have.  Although I love my lovely Bourjois Healthy Mix, it dispenses far too much and I always have to physically restrain myself from applying the entire pump’s worth.  I’ll try to remember to do a before/after foundation and primer routine with the Stay Perfect soon because it really has been one of those rare “ohhhh SKIN LOOKS GOOOOOOD!” revelations.

Rose Gold FOTD1

Hey guys! I forgot to bore you with these…

Posted by Lipglossiping On August - 1 - 2013

So, yeah… I’ve been back off holiday for what feels like forever and I haven’t posted up any of my snaps.  I’m slipping.  You thought you’d gotten away with it for just a minute there didn’t you?

So, anyway… remember we were visiting mid-Wales to suss out its potential as a permanent residence for the family?  Well, I really liked it.  I didn’t mean to really like it… infact, if anything, I secretly hoped to find some fundamental flaw that would mean any hard decisions were taken out of my realm of responsibility.  I’ve got such cold feet now.

We focused our attentions on a town called Builth Wells… it’s remote (by my standards) but not too remote.  I mean, it has a cinema and stuff… probably showing films from the 1930s but well, it’s a start right?  It also seems to contain some of the happiest, friendliest, people I’ve come across on any of my holidays.  It was kinda comical… both me and Paul had been a little apprehensive about whether people would be friendly (I’ve had bad experiences in North Wales) but we walked into a tea-room and literally everyone was leaning across tables talking to one another… and then they started chatting away to us too.  Leila was in her element being fussed over by all the nanas… seriously working the floor like a pro.

We also went north to Llandrindod Wells (gorgeous houses, depressed-feeling town), Rhyader (lovely but probably a bit too remote), and south to Brecon (more going on but also more £££), we’re a little bit flummoxed to be honest, dazed and confused.  Leila went for another pony ride in the Brecon Beacons (still loving it), we picknicked all over the place and celebrated the glorious weather by eating al-fresco every night.

We stayed here and negotiated a great deal for a last minute break, and bar one really uncomfortable futon (there are other beds), I’d totally recommend the accommodation.  There’s also this crazy little suspension bridge just down the road from where we stayed that I was too chicken shit to drive across.  Honestly though, would you have done it?  I don’t even know how many tonnes an average car is… let alone one carrying the three of us after a pub lunch.

Anyway, one of my main reasons for choosing the area was down to many childhood memories of spending time a little north of here in the Elan Valley.  It’s a little gem and a very underrated tourist attraction.  If you live in the Midlands and haven’t heard of it, double shame on you because the area supplies all your drinking water!  Check out some of the scenery from around the region below.

All in all, we spent a lovely 4 days mooching around and boring Leila to tears looking in every. estate. agent’s. window.  I always remember my parents doing that to me whenever we went on holiday, poor little sod.  If you’re in the UK, hope you enjoyed the heatwave that July brought with it.  That’s it now, it’s downhill all the way to Christmas!  What a thoroughly depressing thought!

Have you had your summer holiday already or is the best yet to come?

Red Lip Series: Lime Crime Velvetines in Red Velvet

Posted by Lipglossiping On July - 31 - 2013

You can’t eat cake for breakfast, lunch, and dinner without getting porky.  You can’t put in zero effort and reap all the rewards (unless you’re a cow).  And you can’t wear a kickass, uber-matte lipstick without it all going wrong… eventually.

This is how I feel about the Lime Crime Velvetines in Red Velvet.  I’d held off buying for ages, I’m not a fan of the way the brand has conducted itself in the past and to be honest, I haven’t been a fan of the products that they’ve released either.  But the swatches have been amazing.  Screw the fact that I’m in the 30+ category and “really” shouldn’t be wearing uber matte lipsticks, seriously… screw that!  Red Velvet has been on my radar as a must-have for a long while.  I had to try it, I just had to, didn’t I?

Lime Crime Velvetines Red Velvet Lipstick

The packaging is rather nice actually, less unicorny and more sophisticated girlie… I do like the frosted glass container but there’s one irritation that bothers me each time I use it.  Why is there no inner ridge in the tube where I can scrape off the excess product?  Peering inside, it’s like looking into the Black Hole of Calcutta and when something is this frighteningly pigmented, you need absolute control over the amount of product on the wand.

Without smearing this around the opening, I don’t have that control and it balls up pretty quickly at the top, threatening to make a holy mess.

Lime Crime Velvetines Red Velvet Lipstick_1

But the one thing you can’t deny is that once applied, Red Velvet is in a league of its own.  Richly pigmented, deeply opaque, and velvet-textured… it’s a cracker.  I’ve found it best to apply in two thin layers… once to get perfect outline and once to fill in for complete coverage.  The formula is very wet to begin with and I inevitably end up with some of it on my front teeth.  However, within 60-seconds it dries to an almost powdery finish.

Lime Crime Velvetines Red Velvet Lipstick FOTD

The texture is lightweight but you can “feel” it on your lips because of the apparent dryness it imparts.  It’s not actually that drying in terms of what it does to the condition of your lips but it will happily settle into all of your lip furrows and stick like the proverbial to the outer lip-line.  It’s colour-depth and downright vampiness makes this the perfect choice for a night out… except, you might not want to choose it…

Let me explain…

On me, it wears U-G-L-Y.  I have a large bottom lip and the first place that this disappears is toward the inside of my lip, leaving a horribly apparent ridge of colour.  This colour-ridge narrows as the colour slowly disappears from the centre of my mouth, eventually leaving me with a rather impressive ring around the lower lip-line.  And this is without eating, only drinking.

Compared to some red lipsticks, I actually found this to be relatively transfer-proof, there’s a little left on my glass after drinking but nowhere near as much as most lipsticks.  It also resists transferring to my teeth once it has set on the lip, so it’s a real shame that I experience such horrible overall wear.  You can see the kind of wear I get in this photo on my Tumblr.  You should note, however, that this may be a peculiarity on me… many other bloggers report great wear from this product.

Ultimately, it’s a gorgeous red but I probably won’t wear it without a serious case of paranoia, and when you’re braving a lip this ka-pow, that’s not a great combination.

Lime Crime Velvetines in Red Velvet is priced at £11.50 and available to buy online from love-makeup.co.uk and cutecosmetics.co.uk
