Butter London Fash Pack NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 17 - 2010

Oh noes! I don’t like it!

I can probably count on one hand the number of Butter London polishes I’ve tried and disliked.  This would fall into that sad category.  I had cuticle drag with this one… you can possibly see the remnants on the middle finger at the base (where it looks kinda streaky).  This meant that although in most places it was completely opaque after 2 coats… there were patches that demanded a third coat to finish off.

Everything else I was happy with… formula, drying time, glossiness… so it’s a shame I don’t really like the colour either.

Fash Pack is infused with the most delicious micro golden-sparkles… very similar to how China Glaze’s Ingrid looks in the bottle.  And in the same way, I think that this is what ruins it for me by making it too warm (yet grey at the same time).

Warm and Olive toned ladies, this might be a really great choice for you.  For me, it’s a boob.

Ancienne Ambiance – Christmas Pillar Candles

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 17 - 2010

Last month, I introduced you to luxury good purveyors Ancienne Ambiance and their wonderful Autumnal candle that brought a rich, comforting amber to the table.

This month, I’m bringing you a candle that brings the table to the table.

Say what?

I was sent the Christmas Pillar Candle in Christmas Fruits (£16) and it’s a gold-dipped extravagance of epic proportions.  Beautifully packaged it’s a perfect last-minute gift for any candle-lover in your life.

It burns for 90 hours with an aroma that epitomises all that is good about December 25th…

…Christmas Pudding.

The candle burns with a dark fruitiness that’s never tart nor acidic, just rich and decadent… I’m sure I can even detect a hint of booziness!

I can only burn this for short periods of time as I do find it becomes a little overwhelming after a while – strangely enough, exactly how I feel about eating Christmas Pudding!  Still, it’s better that than a scent you can barely detect right?

Ancienne Ambiance are accepting Christmas orders (by non-courier) up until 12pm on Monday 20th December to ensure that all deliveries make it to their destinations in time for Christmas.

Priced at £16 with free gift wrapping, it’s expensive appearance belies it’s reasonable price tag.

With one of those scents that manages to warm you up from the inside out – Ancienne Ambiance have captured some of the loveliest foodie essences of Christmas very well indeed.

Dupe Alert – NARS Deep Throat vs. The Body Shop Golden Pink

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 16 - 2010

I’ve always thought that The Body Shop Golden Pink blush (04) was considered as a reasonable dupe for NARS Orgasm?  But when I swatched the two… they were quite different.  TBS’ Golden Pink seemed a darker and far more intense.

Then I dug out my NARS Deep Throat blush and got a much better match!

What d’ya reckon ladies?  Dupe or Poop?

Men. Don’t Screw it Up.

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 15 - 2010

A survey by The Perfume Shop has revealed that four out of ten men buy gifts for their wives or partners at Christmas – just so they can use it themselves.  Gits.

But on the plus side, 15 per cent of these men have ended up having a row with their disappointed spouse, with one in ten even getting dumped because of it!  Dumped.  Not that we’re shallow or anything… but seriously, don’t screw it up.

By my calculations Mr. L, you have 10 days left to buy me something nice.  Not Call of Duty: Black Ops nice… proper nice.  Jewellery is a good option as long as it’s not from that dodgy looking stall on the market.  Or Argos.

Don’t bother attempting to buy me clothes… and if you buy me lingerie?  I’ll buy you a new pillow for the sofa.

Makeup?  Yeah… I could live with that but don’t buy me green eyeshadow or coral lipstick.  Or bronzer fit for David Dickinson.  I don’t mean to pile the pressure on… I know it’s not easy for you but living off Heinz Baked Beans for the next 6 months won’t be easy either.

Here’s my thoughts on some of the last-minute fragrance buys available to your lovely selves, including my thoughts of some fragrance samples that I’ve received recently.  Here’s hoping for a sweet-smelling, easy-living Christmas.

1. Noir EDT – The White Company (£35)

Is there a woman in existence that doesn’t swoon over The White Company’s brochure?  It’s the epitome of the “my house would look like that if I didn’t have a real life to live” dream.  Noir is a fresh, fruity fragrance with a heavy dose of amber and a hit of orange that keeps it light.  Not the longest-lasting scent around, I find that I need to reapply after a couple of hours.  On the plus side – if she likes it, next year you can buy her the matching candle, bath soak, body creme and scent diffuser.  I’ve just sorted out your present-buying woes for the next 5 years!

2. Nina L’Elixir – Nina Ricci (fr. £29.50)

I’m a huge fan of the original Nina fragrance and this reincarnation has taken everything I love about the original and celebrated it.  It’s sugary and girly and packs one hell of a fruity punch.  Berries… big juicy cherries and blackcurrants.  I can’t go past a bottle without spritzing it and I’ve not long finished my original Nina…. oh Mr. L, won’t you make a girl’s Christmas? [probably not – Mr. L]

3. L’Eau D’Issey Noir Absolu- Issey Miyake (£59)

If your better half is an original L’Eau d’Issey lover… Noir Absolu should be an obvious choice.  L’Eau D’Issey Noir Absolu is a limited edition offering that takes the original’s floral empire and builds on it with notes that are less clean and more suited to the current time of year.  The ubiquitous amber is there, as is a dash of vanilla to warm it up.  I have to say though, that bottle… it’s stunning in black no?  My favourite of all Issey incarnations I’ve smelt so far and considering how many there have been… that’s saying something!

4. Jean Paul Gaultier Classique EDT – Jean Paul Gaultier (£66.50)

Another limited edition bottle masterpiece.  Don’t worry, the missus won’t think you’ve bought her this solely for the err… feminine bottle shape [tsk].  The beautiful charm that hangs around the bottle neck can be re-used as a handbag charm, whilst the classic fragrance itself has stood the test of time over the past 17 years.  Powdery, floral, soft and ultimately ridiculously feminine… there’s a reason why JPG can get away with retaining the same juice despite all the collectible flacon designs he releases.  It works for many, many women.

5. Naughty Alice – Vivienne Westwood (fr. £34.50)

Another lust-have for me is Naughty Alice by Vivienne Westwood… I think it may be slowly becoming apparent that I have a ‘thing’ for beautifully packaged perfumes.  There’s something to be said for a glamourous-looking dressing table!  Naughty Alice is actually Sweet Alice… it’s another flirty, light and rather girly scent that would have to work hard to offend.  I also think it would make a perfect Spring fragrance… and that lovely whimsical bottle and charm?  *sigh*

6. Elemis Eau de Parfum – Exotic (£35)

Out of all the perfumes included, Exotic is my tip for title of ‘most sensuous’ and with that comes the sub-title ‘most mature’.  I am an unashamed lover of flirty, girly scents but a lady always needs a heavier, headier fragrance in her arsenal aswell.  If Exotic is indeed exotic, then I’d say it comes from Marrakech thanks to the incense and warmth that lingers once the spice notes subside.  Infact, I wish they lingered a touch longer – for an EDP it’s a little short-lived.  But beautiful while it lasts!

.

So, there we have it… my rambly thoughts on potential purchases for the lovely ladies in your lives.

If you’re still in doubt… raid her dressing table for a selection of the perfumes that she currently wears and take them to someone who can advise you further.  It’ll save you hassle in the long run… The Perfume Shop’s survey also revealed that one in five women said they were so annoyed with their partner’s choice of present, they made their bloke buy them another gift to make up for it!

You have been warned.  Don’t screw it up. [that goes for you too Mr. L].

IMATS London 2011 – The Countdown Begins!

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 15 - 2010

Well, it’s just over a month now until the biggest makeup show in town rolls around again.

IMATS, which is produced by Make-Up Artist Magazine stands for International Makeup Artist Tradeshow.

I attended this year and will be doing so again next month – I thought I’d compose a little post for anyone who’s thinking of attending.

Wanna know what to expect?  Read on…

Primarily and most importantly… IMATS is a trade show for trade professionals, though (with the exception of Sunday morning) it is open to the general makeup-loving public.  If you’re thinking of going and expecting to see all the brands you’re familliar with in Boots, don’t.  It’s not Selfridges beauty hall.

What you can expect to find are some fantastic pro brands such as OCC, Yaby, Kryolan, Ben Nye, Paris Berlin, Hakuhodo, Graftobian… really, it’s a dream for discovering some amazing new products and my shopping list for 2011 is getting dangerously long.

£20 will gain you entry to the exhibit floor and claim any available discounts, £33 will let you hear the speakers discuss their craft and share their tips.

So what about these discounts?  The discounts vary from the unimpressive to the very good.  The average is around 20%, though obviously the exhibitors who offered greater discounts (some around the 40% mark) saw their stalls rammed with customers the entire day.

If you want to see a list of the exhibitors who will be at the show next month, you can check them out on the IMATS website.  If you want more specifics on show day discounts, I suggest getting in contact with the exhibitors directly a little closer to the day.

So apart from the shopping… what else is there?

Some of the exhibitors produce fabulous demonstrations that are total eye-candy to watch!  If you pay the extra to listen to the speakers, you get to benefit from the knowledge that the best in the industry have to share.

The speakers for this years IMATS are listed on the IMATS schedule, do keep checking back as they’re sometimes subject to last minute changes.  One word of advice regarding the speakers… make sure you’re there EARLY.  Last year saw some disappointed show-goers who couldn’t get in to Terry Barber’s class due to the sheer numbers that turned up.

The Make Up Museum which showcases some famous works from the top professionals will be returning this year.  I spent a good 10 minutes being completely grossed out by this little makeup masterpiece from last year’s museum!

The show runs for two consecutive days: Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th January and is held at Alexandra Palace in Wood Green (North London). You can buy your tickets in advance online and you should note that from this Friday (17th December), ticket prices will be going up.  Don’t delay!

[stextbox id=”custom” caption=”Lipglossiping top tips for getting the most out of IMATS London 2011″ ccolor=”ffffff” bcolor=”b0c4de” bgcolor=”dcdcdc” cbgcolor=”b0c4de”]~ Have some pre-conceived idea of the brands and exhibitors you want to check out.

~ Contact the exhibitors in advance to find out if they’ll be stocking the ‘must have’ thing that you’re after.  Don’t contact too early though, many won’t have decided what stock they’ll take/discounts they’ll offer until a few days before.

~ Set a budget, it’s easy to go overboard on the spends!

~ Wear comfortable shoes and lots of layers – I was freezing to begin with but roasting by the end of the day!

~ Arrive early to listen to the keynote speakers.

~ Get your shopping done first before taking the time to relax by checking out the demonstrations and chatting to the exhibitors.

~ Sharpen your elbows… the exhibit floor gets BUSY.

[/stextbox]

Will you be going to IMATS next month?  If you’re planning on attending, hope I’ll see you there!

Spreading the festive cheer…

Random catch up…

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 14 - 2010

Morning stinkers!

Are you excited for Christmas?  I’m just starting to feel it properly now yano!  I haven’t got the tree or any decorations up yet… am I the last person in the world?

Oh god, I need to write and send off my Christmas cards too… and finish buying the last few pressies… and wrap them… and food shop… and stick my head in the oven from the stress of it all.  I bet you’re all organised aren’t you?

I hope you’ve been enjoying this year’s Advent giveaway so far and I’m sorry that some of the prizes are only available for the UK girls.  This will become even more apparent in the last week of giveaways I’m afraid.

These are all the prizes that have been donated from various brands and companies from within the UK and whose dealings and interests are all UK-based.  A couple of you have queried the reasoning behind the “UK only” thing and I wanted to let you know that there’s nothing discriminative about it… everything that I’ve purchased for the giveaway myself has been available to all of you lovely people.

What else…

My Red Lip series is proving to be so much fun!  Although I do feel terribly vain everytime I load the site up and see my gurning fizzog about 5 times over on the front page.  I am also taking delivery of far too many red lipsticks!  I just can’t stop buying them – every time you guys send me a photo, I’m off googling the lippie you’re wearing and heaven forbid I find it on eBay… I’m done for!

Talking of your photos, they’ll be going up in batches shortly – I love them and thank you SO much for getting involved.  Everyone loves a red lip (apart from Mr. L) and it’s brilliant that we’re encouraging each other to get a little bit bolder.  Christmas is a great excuse to use too for the shyer types among us!

Wendy at Bloggin’ Beauties was kind/lacking in better offers/bored enough to feature Lipglossiping in her Sunday Spotlight last week!

I’m really honoured… and if you’d like to learn a bit more about my blog (and the ugly mug behind it) head over there to have a squizz at the interview (which is in English)…

http://www.blogginbeauties.nl/featured/sunday-spotlight-lipglossiping/

While you’re there, check out her frankly incredible Halloween look… it makes me want to turn the clock back to October!

Thanks Wendy!  Hope I didn’t send your readers to sleep xx

OK.. so I think that’s all I really had to say [only about 5748957934 words then?]

Enjoy the rest of your week, I hope that all your Christmas plans start to come together (and mine too!)  Don’t forget to keep entering the giveaways and loads of luck to each of you. x

Red Lips Day 4: RMK Irresistible Lips 29 Red

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 13 - 2010

I was a bit naughty… I bought my first red for the series.  I’ve been wanting an RMK lippie for ages and you know what it’s like when you want something… any old excuse right?

I’m very pleased I did buy it though!

RMK Irresistible Lips in 29 Red is a vibrant, slightly pink red.  I actually expected it to be a little sheerer than it is… I’m used to Asian lipsticks coming out less pigmented but this is a cracker and a really balanced lipstick in terms of texture being neither too matte nor too glossy.

One swipe (as with most lipsticks) will give an uneven finish but if I blend the colour with my finger I get one of the best deep pink/red lip stains I’ve worn.   A couple more swipes and you get a finish as in the photo above.

I find pink/reds quite hard to wear as they often clash with my skintone… they have to be spot on or they just look “off”.  This one is pretty good, it’s neither too guava nor raspberry leaning… neutral.

RMK Irresistible Lips also gave me great wear and faded evenly after a few hours…. because it wasn’t completely matte, I was also able to smoosh my lips together to replenish the colour a couple of times before reapplying.

RMK Irresistible Lips in 29 Red (£15) is available to purchase online from LookFantastic

Urban Decay NEW Afterglow Cheek Tints in Quickie and Greedy!

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 13 - 2010

I’m a little bit excited to be showing you these today.  I love Urban Decay, I love Blushes and I love cream blushes most of all…

They come packaged in Urban Decay’s signature purple acrylic emblazoned with a silver serpent… for sizing, they’re a hint smaller than a MAC blush… identical to a TopShop cream blush if you have one to compare.  Each pot contains 4g of product which is about standard when compared to Illamasqua, TopShop, Stila… but less than the generous 6g that MAC provides with their blushcremes.

I have two shades that I was sent to show you today:

Quickie is a vibrant, bubblegum pink that leans to the cool side.  Greedy is a plum/grape shade that is also ideal for cooler skin tones.

The first thing I noticed about these cheek tints are the vibrancy.  Both look rather intimidating in the pan, particularly Greedy which is an almost blackened grape shade.

The texture is interesting, there is a huge amount of slip and neither have that creme-to-powder feeling that you often get with cream blushes.

Quickie is shown on the left, Greedy on the right.

The best way that I can describe these is as having Illamasqua’s slip… but with Tarte’s gel-like consistency.  Another comparison would be to NARS Limited Edition multiple sticks they came out with this summer… especially in terms of the sheer, glowy finish these provide.

All in all, it’s a winning combination in terms of blending.  I would happily state that these are the easiest-to-apply cream blushes (sorry, cheek tints) that I’ve used.  They move around on the skin beautifully and don’t muddy or fade during blending.  The obvious downside to this is that they take a while to ‘set’ and until they have, they will transfer onto clothing etc if you’re not careful.

These can also be used on the lips… the texture lends itself to this well.  Feeling more like a balm when you apply, I didn’t experience any dragging or particular dryness though it’s still worth making sure that your lips are well exfoliated beforehand.  Again though, because of the extra slip… I didn’t find them particularly long-lasting when worn this way.

Out of the two shades I was sent, Quickie is punchier and more pigmented.. the above swatch shows two swipes of the shade.  Greedy is sheerer and the above swatch shows a good 4 swipes to achieve that pigmentation.  Not really a bad thing to be honest considering how intense the shade is… it would be easy to go overboard were it more pigmented I feel.

I thought it might be useful to see Greedy applied… out of the two, it’s my favourite but one that I would have probably overlooked simply because of how it appears in the pan.

Greedy gives one of those natural winter flushes of colour to my skin and also looks lovely worn on the lips (shown above).  I wanted to make sure the colour would show on camera so I’ve applied more heavily than I would normally.

I’d recommend these Urban Decay Afterglow Cheek Tints to anyone but particularly if you struggle with getting blush to look natural.  You have to work quite hard to overdo these (though I’m sure that some of us will still manage!)

I’d also say that these would be particularly suited to those of us with older or drier skin, if you’re quite oily… you may fare better with a cream-to-powder formula for increased longevity.  Alternatively, you could always powder over the top of these to ensure a good ‘set’ that will last you throughout the day.

The Urban Decay Afterglow Glide-On Cheek Tints will retail in the UK at £18 (€28).  Release date TBC.

Butter London – Tramp Stamp NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 12 - 2010

Butter London’s Tramp Stamp is a rich, dark chocolatey shade which leans toward the plum.  It’s a gorgeous Winter shade which would look lovely on tidy, short nails rather than my talons (which have since had an extreme trim!)

When a creme is done well, there’s nothing that can really beat it is there?  Look Ma, no top coat!  Glossy and luxurious looking, this is one brown that is anything but dull.

I found the formula, application and all that stuff to be fine… a touch of cuticle drag on the 2nd coat which needed a 3rd just to cover it up, though in fairness I was a litttle hasty in application and the 1st coat may not have been quite dry enough.

Butter London’s Tramp Stamp is available to buy online from PowderRooms priced at £9.75

HD Brows Baby!

Posted by Lipglossiping On December - 12 - 2010

This is a wordy one, consider yourselves pre-warned!

I spent last Thursday evening in a mild state of panic at the thought of what I might be letting myself in for…

I’d booked myself in for an “HD Brows” treatment at a local salon… I’ve been wanting one of these since I first heard about them a couple of months ago and I’d finally bitten the bullet.

But why the panic?  Well… it wasn’t real panic, more… slight anxiety.  I’ve never done anything to my brows other than (over)pluck them myself.  No waxing, threading… nada.  Was the beautician going to point and laugh, gasp in horror, back out of the room slowly or a combination of all three?

Let’s remind ourselves of my eyebrows in their normal state shall we?

There’s worse brows out there, I know… but mine could definitely benefit from a little help.

The treatment involves 7 steps, which creator Nilam Patel and her team claim will help you achieve the perfect brow.  Sign me up!

My technician began by asking me how dark I wanted to go.  I had a little wobble at this point… in my head, I was picturing Katie Price’s unflatteringly dark brows (they actually use Katie Price as a marketing tool, which nearly put me off the whole idea).

I ended up expressing that I wanted a good, dark brown that stopped short of harsh but that would negate the need for brow powder if I was feeling lazy.

It would have been helpful if she’d had some kind of colour/depth chart available.  It’s very hard to describe something like that without visual aids.  I was also expecting my technician to ask me some questions about how I wanted my brows shaped… but she didn’t!  I only realised this mid-treatment as she was waxing away.  My heart skipped a beat as I thought “Christ!  She could be doing anything up there!”  I scanned the room for Hello Kitty eyebrow stencils… thankfully there were none to be seen.

After we’d come to a vague agreement on how dark I wanted to go, my technician began tinting my brows.  While the dye developed, we talked about how popular the treatment was becoming.  Between the HD Brow, Eyelash Extensions and Shellac nails that she offers – her books are full in the run up to Xmas!  We are a vain lot aren’t we?!

She wiped off the excess and left my field of vision for a moment… I jumped a little when I felt her apply warm wax to my arch… I wasn’t expecting that!  Prior warning would have been good!  The waxing didn’t hurt at all… I was expecting it to be a little ‘ouchie’… but no, I’d happily go so far as to call it painless.

Compared to the other hair removal methods that my technician performed on me… waxing seemed to be the one she spent most time doing.  She waxed under my arches, at the ends of the brows and between the brows.  Threading was reserved for the top line of the brows only and tweezing just in a couple of places at the very end (this seemed to be done for precision).

She commented that my brows were particularly difficult to shape thanks to their curliness!  Eek!  She said that I would need a good, strong brow gel and spoolie to keep them in alignment… so if anyone has any recommendations, let me know!

Once my technician appeared happy with the shape, she gave my brows a wipe before trimming them and then reaching for a brow palette.  30 seconds later and we were done!  She passed me a mirror and I had a look…

I could see that they were a really good shape and looking far fuller than when I went in… someone had transplanted Brooke Shields eyebrows onto my face!  I wasn’t delighted about the fact that the dye was still so apparent… it meant that I’d have to spend the rest of the afternoon in town with comedy brows.

If this is standard practice, I don’t see the point in the 7th step of treatment… if brows are really dark from the tint residue still being on them, the last thing you want is to add to it by powdering them in with the palette!

I sat in Cafe Nero, sipping my black coffee with eyebrows that matched.  I’m talking this (though obviously perfectly shaped and two of them!)  Mr. L was sniggering into his tea and Leila kept eyeing me suspiciously through the crumbs of her Pain au Raisin.  I just kept my head down and plotted my revenge on the pair of them.

I was advised not to wash the area until the next day… this was to give the tint the optimum time it needed to ‘take’.  I was a little concerned that I might make them too dark by doing this but I’m a good, obedient girl and followed her advice… taking care to avoid the area when washing my face for bed.

Wanna see how they turned out?

I’m really pleased with them!

Is it worth the £25 I paid?  Yes!  And no…

I need to find out how much it costs to get them threaded and tinted locally… as if done well, this would produce the same result without the catchy “HD Brows” moniker.

Maintenance (according to my therapist) is needed once a month.  There’s no way I’d pay £25 a month on my eyebrows.  Not a chance.

So who would I recommend this HD Brow treatment for?  I’d recommend it for people like me… people who don’t already have a perfect shape that they’re maintaining and who wouldn’t normally leave the house without filling in and darkening their brows.  It’s a really good way to instantly transform your eyebrows and get yourself put on the right path for future maintenance.

If you have a big night out or an event you need to look great for… go for it.  It’s a convenient, all-in-one option.
