Hello Autumn! An Autumnal NOTD with Beauty UK and Inglot

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 8 - 2011

There’s nothing like an el-cheapo nail polish to quench that insatiable itch to buy something.  I was walking round town last week and felt the need to scratch.  Still recovering from the new lens purchase (it may be some time), I dived into Superdrug for something that wouldn’t break the bank and emerged triumphant with this little beauty…

…BeautyUK to be precise.  Voodoo – No. 55 (£1.99) is an absolute cracking shade for Autumn, a deep russet with a playful shimmer that glows in the right light.  Two coats to achieve opacity, I did get a tiny bit of bubbling on one nail which made me a little more careful with the application than I might normally be.

After admiring my manicure for half a day, I decided, beautiful though it is, I wanted moar Autumn.  I dug out my Inglot Flakie #205 and slapped on a coat…

Now we’re talking!  I see toffee apples, fallen leaves, crisp afternoons and misty mornings.  Brrr… c’mon Autumn, I’m ready for you!

Are you ready for Autumn?  Digging out your vampier shades yet?

Biba Fever at House of Fraser!

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 7 - 2011

Back when Justin Bieber was nothing but a twinkle in his Grandfather’s eye, Biba was turning heads as an iconic 70s London store bringing fashion to the high street as the Top Shop of its day. The label is currently enjoying its 2nd relaunch and doing rather well, so much so, that the House of Fraser owned brand is on the cusp of relaunching Biba’s iconic makeup line with a beautiful capsule collection.

Biba Face Palette (34.00)

Six luxurious eyeshadows, a rich oyster pearl highlighter and dewy pink blusher to create alluring and sensuous looks-perfect from dawn unto dusk.

Biba Lipgloss Ring (£15.00)

This chunky cocktail ring will draw admiring glances with its nod to the iconic Biba logo. The lid slides to one side to reveal a shimmery pink gloss for the perfect pout! It can also be used to adorn your bag as a charm.

Biba Baked Eyeshadow Palette (£26.00)

Velvety soft mineral eyeshadows in opulent shades of molten metal and precious jewels. Use a dampened brush for intense long wearing colour.

Biba Luscious Lashes Duo (£18.00)

Biba lashes are sure to make a statement. Two pairs – one show stopping evening pair and one for a more natural day look will ensure that you are never overlooked.

Biba Lip Palette (£24.00)

Luscious and indulgent lip colours in five luxurious shades. Custom blend the lip colour for a unique style all of your own.

Biba Nail Polish Trio (£21.00)

Nail polish is the ultimate finishing touch to any look and these three stand-out shades will add a little something to every outfit.

.

So there we have it, the re-launch of Biba Makeup. Not, as Barbara Hulanicki would have it, I’m almost positive of that. The collection most obviously strays from the affordable ethos that the original Biba held so close to its heart but I can’t deny that I’m loving the look of that nail polish trio and the baked eye palette for its Biba aesthetics and shade choices.

I was lucky enough to have been sent the lashes from the capsule collection and have passed them on to madame Lash Queen (Liloo) who has promised to give them an outing for us in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!

Biba Beauty launches exclusively in House of Fraser from the 1st October 2011.

Will you be checking out the return of Biba Beauty?

I wrote about Molton Brown‘s new fine fragrance line back at the end of July (how quickly is this year whizzing through?) but I thought it was time for a recap in honour of their brand new Facebook App which will allow Molton Brown fans to profile themselves against the new fragrances and sign up for a complementary sample!

I went along to the launch last week and got the chance to speak to the perfumer behind the new range.  Talk about a fangirl moment, it was touching to see how completely excited she was with the launch of her ‘babies’.  I have to admit, I kept looking at her nose and wondering how much she could insure it for.

The Five new fragrances range from a light, yet soulful floral (Lijiang) through to the dark and brooding (Iunu).  Each pay homage to the part of the world for which they’re named.  The tie that holds the range together is the ancient Spice Trail, beginning in the birthplace of perfume (Egypt) and following its path to completion in the New World (Canada).

Jennifer Jambon, the perfumer behind the collection (on the left) has worked hard to evoke the feelings one would associate with the various destinations… they may not all be completely true to life, but they still work beautifully in a slightly fantastical way.  I received a sample of my personal favourite, Iunu and one sniff skillfully transports me to an ancient land I’ve never had the pleasure to visit.

Inspired by Egypt, the Birthplace of Scent, I detect the arid, musky notes that I’d associate with the Nile Delta.  Myrrh, hot pepper, sandalwood, clovebud and white jasmine transport me to those faraway river banks in a cloud of ancient opulence and mystery.  Truly intoxicating, a little bit dirty and with the kind of warmth that ensures this fragrance will sing on my skin as the months get cooler, I’m smitten.

The other four fragrances each carry their own personality just as confidently (Singosari is also particularly divine!), it’s a case of marrying up your scent personality to the fragrance.  This is where the new Facebook App comes into its own.

Take your own journey through a series of questions, where you’ll be able to discover which fragrance you are most suited to based on your tastes and preferences. Once the quiz has been completed, you will be able to sign up for a complementary sample of your chosen fragrance.  Get navigating explorers!

Molton Brown Navigations Through Scent fragrances are available to buy nationwide from Molton Brown stores, concessions and online.  Prices from £55.00

Inexpensive Beauty Find: Coconut Exfoliating Bar by Wembe

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 6 - 2011

Well, crack one open (between my thighs) and send me to the tropics because I think I might need today’s inexpensive beauty find in my life.

Wembe is an organic soap company hailing from Brooklyn and the brand have just launched into the UK market!

I love the sound of their Coconut Exfoliating Bar which promises to combine gentle exfoliation from two types of coconut pulp, whilst leaving your skin soft and supple thanks to a blend of rich essential oils and moisturising butters.

Ingredients: Cupassu butter (Theobroma grandiflorum), Sodium Salts from Vegetable Oils, Coconut oil (Cocus nucifera), Coconut Pulp ( Cocus nucifera)

Priced reasonably at £5.85 ensures that this Vegan body treat stays on my radar for a little while longer.

Given the choice between packing my makeup bag for 5 days away and the 12 Labours of Hercules, I’d take his job any day.  Infact, he got off lightly, slaying the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra?  Piece of cake.  Try choosing between NARS Torrid and NARS Deep Throat.  That’s what you call a task.

I’m not gonna accompany the photos with review-type commentary but if you have any questions, shout ’em at me.

Penhaligon’s Juniper Sling: The tipple that won’t get you drunk!

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 5 - 2011

Today marks the launch of Penhaligon’s latest fragrance: Juniper Sling*.   A compulsive cocktail, the fragrance pays homage to London’s roaring twenties and the beloved iconic tipple of the day, London Dry Gin.

A headying mix of juniper, angelica and brandy with a gourmand sugar base and a beating heart of cardamom, leather and black pepper ensures that you won’t forget it in a hurry.

I’m first hit by the bitter orange notes, liberally laced with black pepper floating upon the unmistakable backdrop of the Juniper berry.  I don’t get much gourmand from this, the sweetness promised by the base notes fails to surface on my skin but I do get the rich smokiness from the vetiver which charms me for many hours.

Described as unisex, it leans slightly masculine but that suits my fragrance tastes perfectly.  Juniper Sling is a charming and intoxicating scent from the London Perfumers that evokes a time when the Bright Young Things really knew how to throw a party.

On my last trip into London, I was able to dedicate a little detour to Les Senteurs and on my next trip, I hope to spare the time to investigate the Penhaligon’s store in Covent Garden for a closer look at some of the other scents available.

Penhaligon’s Juniper Sling EDT is available in 50ml & 100ml, priced at £78/£110 respectively.  Available in Penhaligon’s boutiques, concessions and online at www.penhaligons.com

A little catch up (and an excuse to talk about my holiday)

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 5 - 2011

I’ve been away!  Did you miss me?  Of course not, because you were kept in extremely good company thanks to my brilliant guest bloggers last week.  In-case you missed their posts you can catch up by clicking through to: Amrita, Robyn, Lily and Liloo.

Anyway, I’m back!  Although, it’s not with the vengeance I would have liked.  Leila has been hit with a mega-cold on-top of a poorly chest so we’ve been sleeping upright at night which as it turns out, doesn’t actually involve much sleeping at all.

Other than that, I have been dodging the piles of emails that amass whenever I turn my back for a second, trying to get unpacked and look after other work (you know, the proper stuff that pays the bills).  What I’m trying to say, in a really convoluted way is this…

Here, please have a look at my holiday photos instead of a proper beauty post.  I’ll get things back on an even keel before the week is through!

Clockwise from Top Left:

1 Kemble Street (a.k.a Space House) – I love the architecture when walking around London.  From impressive Victorian terraces to stately granite-clad frontages.  Futuristic glass walled skyscrapers to concrete, Brutalist obelisks.  The landscape is rich and varied!

Flatbread at Patogh Edgware Road – Just off Edgware Road is a tiny blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Persian place called Patogh.  It has about 7 tables in total and if you wanna get in, you better get in early.  If you do, you’ll be treated to heavenly sesame-seed dusted flatbreads and minced lamb kebabs to make your mouth water.  We paid £16 all in and walked out with full bellies.

Tate Modern Chimney – I’d like to pretend that I’m all cultured and stuff but I’m really not.  I walk around the Tate Modern as a child might, devouring the cool stuff and not bothering to ‘understand’ anything.  Still, I love the building.

Leila and Me in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern – We were contemplating where we could go for cake/ice cream/chocolate – or all of the above.

Clockwise from Top Left:

Leila and the Mega Towers – At Canary Wharf, they’re kinda piddly towers compared to other cities across the globe but they’re still pretty impressive to look up at from street level.  I like Canary Wharf, I like to sit and watch everyone doing busy stuff while I have nothing in the world to do but watch.

Bargainista Afternoon Tea – We didn’t plan to stop for a proper Afternoon Tea and many would be horrified that I even dare call this an Afternoon Tea but tough.  The John Lewis Bistro on the 3rd Floor of the store in Oxford St does a fine spread for less than £10 each.  Attentive service, relaxed surroundings and you barely need to leave the beauty hall.  Good stuff.

Back when Barbie was Cool – At the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, I discovered a super-cool Barbie.  Still impossibly well-endowed, she can work those cat eyes sunnies better than most.

Mudchute Farm – Bang in the middle of the Isle of Dogs, overshadowed by the towers of Canary Wharf is an Urban Farm project.  They have giant pigs that made me rethink my love for bacon, sheep that looked just a tiny bit mutated (perhaps from all those inner city fumes) and a petting corner that included ferrets!  A wonderful green lung in the middle of the city.

Clockwise from Top Left:

The Elgin in Ladbroke Grove – If you are/have ever been a Clash fan, this establishment will mean something to you – if not, it’s just a pub in West London that used to play frequent host to the greatest front-man ever.

Ghost-rider at South Bank Skate Park – I can never walk past this place without slowing down to see if anyone falls off their bike or skate board.  I was treated to a spectacular tumble on Saturday which had the gathered crowds “ooooohing” before a big cheer when the rider jumped up with a wave!

Turbine Hall at Tate Modern – Despite the hustle and bustle, this is such a peaceful place… a huge expanse that plays host to frequent exhibitions.  I remember a few years back, they installed a giant slide… too. much. fun.  Sadly, it was a little sparse when we visited.

Millennium Bridge/St. Pauls – The juxtaposition of the old and the new is around every corner.  Don’t they sit comfortably together?  I love this view.

.

Well, now I’ve given myself the post-holiday blues! Sigh. I’ve got a couple of days away to Brighton coming later in the month so I’ll just focus on that instead.  I hope you all had lovely weekends – down with Monday mornings!

Question of the Week: – What’s your never-leave-home-without-it beauty product?

Answer: EASY!  My eyebrow powder.  Either my SUQQU (forgotten the shade name and it’s in my suitcase!) or my Illamasqua powder in Gaze – which is ironic ‘cos I’ve actually LOST it.  I keep meaning to have a mega search but haven’t found the time yet.

Clumps of Mascara – is shocked at how awesome Sally Hansen’s Xtreme Wear polishes are. You HAVE to get Pumpkin Spice. It’s the perfect polish for Halloween.

EauMG – Victoria gives video reviews a try. One of her first reviews is of Juicy Couture Couture Couture. This fragrance is a tribute to be florals of the 80’s.

Gouldylox ReviewsBrazilian Peels being raved about by everyone I know. But are they worth the price tag if you regularly partake in a peel?

Krasey Beauty – Read all about Krasey Beauty’s purple hair transformation!

Lipglossiping – wants you to dish the dirt on your worst beauty counter experiences, a trauma shared is a trauma – erm, relived?!

Nouveau Cheap – What can a pure white eyeshadow base do for you? Come see what NYX Eyeshadow Base White did for me.

Pink Sith – It’s a 12 step meeting. It’s a Zombie Movie. No. It’s Rouge Bunny Rouge Long-lasting Eye Shadow in Delicate Hummingbird. Find out if this screenplay has a happy ending!

Prime Beauty – tells us why it’s important to add a facial mask to your weekly skincare routine and lets you in on her top 5 picks!

…Featuring: Le Petit Jardin de Liloo

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 2 - 2011

Ahh Liloo, mon petit chou-fleur (she likes it when I call her that).  I’m delighted to have this French-firecracker guest blogging for us today.  She’s the queen of Halloween, the high-priestess of Twitter and accelerates from nought to ‘passionate’ quicker that a Lamborghini super-charged Citroen.

Today, she’s going to help us out with those pesky false lashes as she looks at the “8 reasons why you still can’t apply false lashes”.

So, grab a cup of tea, settle back, and read on as Lipglossiping.com features: LePetitJardindeLiloo

.

Bonjour, my name is Liloo and I am a recovering hopeless false lash wearer.  Throughout my life, I’ve been obsessed with many things: trying to find the perfect foundation which doesn’t break the bank, the best fake tan, achieving a dramatic cut crease… but nothing has possessed me as deeply as trying to apply false lashes.  I couldn’t tell you how many “how-to” youtube videos I’ve watched in frustration as the false lash appears to pop itself perfectly on the wearer’s upper lashline as if by voodoo!  How do they do it?  What am I doing wrong?

Patience is not one of my virtues, I’ve never been further than Green Hill on Sonic the Hedgehog and a scrambled Rubik’s Cube lasts about my 5 minutes before flying across the room.  But a few years on, I feel I’ve finally cracked it.  I feel I can now apply *some* false lashes confidently enough to seen in public.  But it’s been one heck of a tumultuous learning journey and I wanted to share some tips I have learnt along the way:

  1. Packet-ready: You expect the lash to fit straight from the packet

There is no way I would expect trousers I bought from the shop to fit my voluminous derriere and my short legs, without having to alter them.  Lashes are the same and I find myself having to trim the lashline on most lashes.  Make sure to measure the lashes before applying them and trim them accordingly, If in doubt, it’s better if they are too short, and you can always rely on some eyeliner to fake the little bit of lashline missing.  Went a bit mad with the scissors?  Again, not a problem as you can pretend they were corner lashes all along.  You bought full lashes and you want them to be noticeable but if they are sticking out too much on the outer corner, the eyelid will look heavy, as if it’s dragged down and the whole eye will look more closed off than before you started.  Placing it too close to the inner corner will bring a whole host of problems: 1) It will look unnatural, as your natural lashes only really start to be noticeable where the pupil starts, 2) you’ll struggle to make it stick without pinging out, 3) it will be very uncomfortable.

  1. Run: You want to run before you can walk

You want to make an impact and have chosen the most extravagant lashes to wear.  Dramatic, full fancy and elaborate lashes will need a thick lashline to support all the drama.  The more dramatic the lashes are, the thicker the lashline will be, and the more difficult they will be to apply and align just right on your lashline.  Don’t throw away your amazing lashes, keep them for later when you’ve gained a bit more confidence.  Aim to wear subtle effect lashes first and work your way up.

  1. Application Sequence: You apply false lashes after you’ve done your makeup.

This might be controversial but picture this: You’ve done the most amazing makeup ever. You’re so proud, you took 107 photos of it.  Are you really going to try 4 times to apply your false lashes, with glue all over the place and risking ruining your eyeshadow masterpiece?  No.  What you’ll end up doing is try to apply the lash just once and give up after that.  Why? Because while you removed the lash, the glue ripped some eyeshadow in the process, your perfect eyeliner smudged along the way.  You’re then left to try to fix your makeup, feeling worse off, wondering why you even bothered.

However, if you apply the lashes BEFORE any makeup, while you’re still trying to feet and learning, first you’ll have the best vision of your lashline and there will be no makeup to ruin. If there are pesky residues of glue in the process you won’t feel it so bad at trying to scrape it all off.  The obvious drawback is that the lash might have some eyeshadow fall out on it, so you’ll have to be extra careful at tapping the excess of eyeshadow beforehand.

  1. Cause it’s not you, it’s me

The lashes are rubbish, not you.  You bought lashes that are so poor quality, that even an experienced falsies wearer would not go near them because they don’t sit right.  The first pair of eyelashes I bought were NYC £1.99 lashes and a few years down the line, I now understand why I was struggling so much.  Once you take them out of their curvy support, the lash transforms itself into a straight fringe of hair. You’re forever trying to make it ‘marry’ the natural horizontal curve of your eye and whatever you do it’s pinging out, on the inside and outside corner of your eye.  Again, this might be a bit controversial, but even if you are beginner you need to invest in decent pair of eyelashes, it makes such a difference.  No need to spend a fortune, but aim to spend minimum of £5 and go and spend your pennies in a brand who specialises in lashes, like Eylure or Ardell if you’re outside England.  Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing before removing the lash from support if they’re going to all straight or retain their curvy shape, so you’ll have to rely on recommendations from people you trust.  Yes, I am sure you can find decent £1 lashes, but as a beginner you need all the help you can get and you need to the lash to do some of the work for you.

  1. Time

You’re not giving yourself enough time.  Not time in general (I gave myself years) but time on that day/evening before that special occasion where you want to wear your fluttery and dreamy lashes.  How long?  If you spend one hour to dry and style your hair, give yourself also 1 hour (you will inevitably be distracted) to apply your lashes, and aim to reduce progressively that as you grow more confident.  Eyelashes can make such a dramatic impact, I feel it’s totally worth spending the time.  If you like to include a little bit of spirit in your getting ready routine, I find it helps not to finish the bottle of vodka before applying my lashes.

  1. It’s not sticking properly

Not all glues are created equal.  Most glues which come with lashes are not very good, so stick to reputable brands such as Duo, Eylure and Ardell, which are totally resealable.  I’ve been wearing lashes for years, but I always like to carry a little bit of glue, in case. Call it my comfort blanket.

  1. Sit and Wait: Your timing is not right

There is nothing more irritating than following instructions to the letter and not getting it right.  You’ve counted 30 (Mississippi) seconds, you’re reading to tame the beast and introduce them to your lashline and it’s not working.  Apply the lash too soon, the glue will be too wet and the lash will end up everywhere but not on your lashline.  Wait too long, the glue is too dry, it will either not stick at all or you’ll be left with just one chance to get it perfect with no room to reposition it.  The best moment is when the glue is tacky.  “Tacky” is when the glue becomes almost transparent and when you touch it and it does small strings similar to melted cheese on a pizza, when you cut off a slice and the cheese trying to come off with it.

  1. Elp! You’re not using all the help available

Kids will start learning to ride a bike with stabilizers attached.  You can do the same for lashes.  Experienced false lash wearers will use a normal pair of tweezers or just their hand.  What if they made giant tweezers the same size as your lashline?  They do and it’s simply called a ‘false lash applicator’.  I found my stabilizers years ago from Japonesque, the best £7 I’ve ever spent.  Using the eyelash applicator made all the difference and, it was only then that I felt I had finally cracked it.  I am actually getting a little bit emotional reminiscing how happy it made me.  I can feel pretty now!

My lashes are so short, so straight.  Wearing false lashes gives me such a boost that it has become what I like the most about ‘makeup’.  The secret recipe for false application?  You’ve probably found it already, not very well hidden at the beginning of each paragraph 😉  When you’ve found it, do it, do it and do it again, like there’s no tomorrow.

You think you’ve ruined the lash after not getting it right for the first time? The lash can take it, it’s meant to be used and used and used again.  If the lash looks a bit bruised, that’s fine – it will help make it look more natural.  Keep at it, don’t give up, the rewards are worth it, I promise.

Happy false lashing xx

.

Thanks Liloo!  I’m gonna get some more practice in!  You’ve enabled that Japonesque lash placement tool straight into my shopping bag, looking forward to trying it!  False lashes were the one thing I wished I’d had the confidence to use when I went to that wedding last month.  I will get it eventually!
