The Lipstick League – Week of 23.9.13

Posted by Lipglossiping On October - 1 - 2013

Question of the Week: Do you switch up your skincare routine with the change of the seasons? How are you preparing for the cooler weather?

lipstickleague - final

Answer: – I generally just use a heavier, creamier moisturiser and exfoliate a little more regularly to keep the flakes at bay, nothing too groundbreaking!

Chalkboard Nails – Disney fans will recognize the Titans in this Hercules nail art — thankfully, Zeus has let me borrow his thunderbolts to keep them in check!

Clumps of Mascara – changed her hair. Yes again! Check out what she did.

EauMG – This perfume sets the scene for a Lovecraft tale. Here’s a deep patchouli scent by Roxana Illuminated Perfumes.

Gouldylox Reviews – Want waves that last through sleep and a trip to the gym? This mineral totally worked for me

Lipglossiping – washes away the day’s grime with a look at what are (probably) the most expensive face wipes in the world…

My Beauty Bunny – is gearing up for the BeWell Beauty and Wellness Expo coming to Pasadena this October. Want to win tickets and a swag bag worth $300? Of course you do. Stop on by and enter!

Nouveau Cheap – I rarely declare something a new “Holy Grail” product, but in the case of this facial cleanser, it’s so good that I haven’t wanted to reach for something else in months.

Pink Sith – thinks raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens is cool and all, but she would rather tell you about her favorite Oils for face, hair, nails and body.

Prime Beauty – and other top beauty bloggers give you a peak at what’s in their purses!

Phyrra – tells you how to get sublime skin with Cover FX CC Cream Time Release Tinted Treatment SPF 30!

we heart this – have been talking about the OCC moderncraft nail lacquers for weeks. If you can only get one polish from the whole launch, get Isherwood. Seriously…

Sick note

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 30 - 2013

I can’t remember the last time I haven’t touched the blog in over a week. I also can’t remember the last time I read a book that didn’t begin with the words “Once upon a time…” – those two scenarios may be related.

I’ve been a bit icky this past week, I think I’ve spent more time in bed than out of it and I’m afraid that blogging has most definitely come second-best to milking it for cuddles, cups of tea, and bacon sandwiches in bed (obviously not that ill!)

Anyway, I just wanted to leave a little update as to my MIA status, I haven’t even been around much on Twitter, I know!

I have, however, got a lovely competition coming up this week to win three of my all-time favourite skin-care products, so do look out for that and I’ll hopefully be back in the swing of things within a few days.

Hope you’re all doing really well, do let me know of any new happenings with you or internet funnies you’ve discovered if you can be arsed, anything to distract me from daytime telly would be most appreciated.

Love, me xxx

(Probably) the most expensive face wipes in the world…

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 23 - 2013

In these times of austerity, does anything seem more wasteful than spending ££££ on disposable face wipes?  But for every face-wipe detractor out there, you’ll find someone who wouldn’t be without the convenience of their skincare-enriched, disposable towels.

As someone who tries to avoid too much water when cleansing, I’ve been known to use face wipes as part of my cleansing routine.  Not to remove a full face of makeup, but to freshen my face in the mornings…  I have to admit, however, that I’ve never paid more than around £6 for a pack.  I’m not sure I could bring myself to pay any more than this… but would you part with the cash for any of these?

face-wipes

01: Murad Clarifying Wipes for Blemish-Prone Skin (£18.00, lookfantastic.com) – 30 wipes per pack / 60p per wipe

These wipes from Doctor-led brand Murad have been enriched with witch hazel, algae extract, grape seed extract and vitamin E.  Designed specifically for blemish-prone skintypes, the wipes promise to tighten your pores, regulate sebum and oil production and protect your skin from free radical damage.

02: Dermalogica Skin Purifying Wipes (£14.40, jerseybeautycompany.co.uk) – 20 wipes per pack / 72p per wipe

The Dermalogica Skin Purifying Wipes contain Antibacterial Triclosan, extracts of Balm Mint, Coneflower and Camphor, Salicylic Acid, and witch-hazel to cleanse, remove excess surface oil, and purify the skin.  These are particularly recommended for popping in your gym bag as a post-workout freshen-up.

03: Ole Henriksen Truth To Go Wipes (£15.00, hqhair.com) – 30 wipes per pack / 50p per wipe

For a less astringent cleanse, the Ole Henriksen Truth To Go wipes offer naturally based mild surfactants to gently lift away dirt and impurities while essential fatty acids nourish the skin.  These orange-scented wipes also include Vitamin C and Micro Algae stimulates Collagen production to lighten, brighten and tighten the skin.

04: Stila Ready for Take Off Moisturizing Cleansing Cloths (£12.50, fenwick.co.uk) 30 wipes per pack / 42p per wipe

The clue is in the name.  These wipes from Stila promise to deliver a more moisturising cleanse, perfect for the upcoming colder months.  Containing extracts of  lavender, chamomile, and aloe vera these wipes are made without synthetic fragrance, mineral oil, sulfates, parabens or phthalates, making them a great choice for more sensitive skins.

05: MAC Cosmetics Wipes (£15.00, debenhams.com) 45 wipes per pack / 33p per wipe

These oversized wipes from staple cosmetic brand MAC promise to make quick work of makeup-removal.  Saturated with M·A·C cleanser and infused with vitamin E, they offer a convenient cleanse.  Less of a skin treatment wipe, more of a fuss-free cleanse and go.

Would pay over £10 for a pack of face-wipes?  Are you a fan of any that I’ve mentioned?

The Lipstick League – Week of 16.09.13

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 23 - 2013

Question of the Week: Fall is here! What makeup items are you adding to your stash to celebrate the season?

lipstickleague - final

Answer: I’m adding creamy things in anticipation of my skin becoming drier, such as Dior’s Creme Blush in Bikini.  I’m also lusting after (but haven’t committed to yet) some The Balm goodies after seeing swatches on Temptalia.

Chalkboard Nails – This hand placed glitter nail art answers important questions like, “What would a mermaid look like if she was going out clubbing?”

Clumps of Mascara – In honor of Skin Care Awareness Month, I’m giving away a $150 Whole Foods gift card. The lucky winner will be able to load up on skin healthy fruits and veggies!

EauMG – shares her perfume picks for autumn 2013. From hayrides to date night, Victoria has a perfume suggestion for you!

Gouldylox Reviews – Hey Now!  I joined the Stern Universe for one morning and got the chance to ask the beautiful Lisa G how she does it.

Lipglossiping – gets technical and puts Guerlain’s latest foundation to the test, soon discovering that this scientifically-advanced base is the one testing her!

My Beauty Bunny – Blow outs go to the dogs! I had a doggy spa day thanks to the Metro Air Force Commander, a compact dog drying/grooming tool all spoiled pooches must have!

Nouveau Cheap – The Walgreens-exclusive Disney Villains Collections have landed, and one of my favorites is the e.l.f. Maleficent Look Book. Your inner villain won’t be disappointed.

Pink Sith – asks if you are doing serious damage to your hair with your flat iron. She has 5 Helpful Flat Ironing Tips for you to look your best!

Prime Beauty – takes a look at Lancôme’s the Absolu Désir Collection for Fall 2013 and it’s trés magnifique!

Phyrra – shares her most favorite cruelty free beauty products! From hair to skincare, makeup and more!

we heart this – discovers multiple levels of nude perfection, courtesy of Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylos.

What makeup items are you adding to your stash to celebrate the season?

Butter London Kerfuffle NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 20 - 2013

In another completely-inappropriate-shade-for-the-season, today I’m sporting Butter London’s Kerfuffle.  A word that I can’t actually say without immediately thinking of Lou from Little Britain’s Lou and Andy.

Kerfuffle is a delicate pink-peach creme with a glossy finish in a bright (but not too bright) base.  Application was fine, three coats for full opacity with a formula that didn’t disappoint.  It’s a soft, pretty-looking shade that should complement most skin-tones nicely.  The chances of this pairing up with tanned toes as we approach Winter is unlikely, but should it get the chance… I think it would look very nice!

Butter London Kerfuffle NOTD

Butter London Kerfuffle is priced at £11.95 and available to buy online from powderrooms.com

Autumn Beauty Pick: Clinique Fresh Bloom All Over Colour in Plum Poppy

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 20 - 2013

Give it a couple more months and we won’t need to use blusher.  The faux Jack-Frost-has-been-pinching-your-cheeks look will be served up daily by Mother Nature.  In the mean-time, Clinique have a rather lovely solution to inject some colour into our cheeks!

First things first, it’s a thing of beauty in the pan.  I mean, look at it.  Look!  I never tire of pretty makeup…

clinique-plum-poppy1

clinique-plum-poppy2

clinique-plum-poppy3

Considering I struggled like hell to cut out pastry leaves that actually looked anything like leaves for the top of my apple pie last week, you can colour me impressed by Clinique’s ability to craft a bleedin’ poppy into their blusher pans.  You don’t want me to spoil that pristine surface do you?

Tough.  Here’s a swatch:

clinique-plum-poppy4

Plum Poppy makes for a soft-neutral shade with enough pink in it to ensure that it’s a flattering choice for cool skin-toned girls like myself.  The pink keeps the colour looking fresh, rather than muddy as some plums (including the much-loved NARS Sin) tend to turn against my complexion.  There’s a slight iridescence to the formula that translates nicely once on the skin, giving a subtle highlight without any over-the-top shimmer or sparkle.

The texture is soft and picks up easily on a brush.  For application, I prefer to use a stippling brush… just for a lighter touch as I do tend to be a little heavy-handed and Plum Poppy doesn’t take too much effort to build into a natural-looking flush.

The brand actually market this as an “all-over color” as well as a blush, meaning that you could… if you wanted to…. wear this all over your face.  In my opinion, it’s far too pigmented for that kind of application but hey, whatever tickles your pickle!

clinique-plum-poppy

Clinique Fresh Bloom All Over Color in Plum Poppy is priced at £26 and is available to buy on counter and online at johnlewis.com

Fenwick Beauty Week (28th September – 5th October)

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 19 - 2013

As a terminally unfashionable sort of person, you know what you can do with your fashion weeks don’t you?  Which is why you didn’t read a single LFW-related post on this here blog this year.  Beauty weeks however… well, that’s a whole different ball game!

Fenwick (of Bond Street) have long been my favourite beauty destination whilst in London.  The venue is less frenetic than that of Selfridges, the atmosphere calmer.  The brands feel more “at home” and hand-picked, in a similar way to those at Liberty and they’re not afraid to clear their end of season beauty products at great prices.  From cosmetics to fragrances, I’ve picked up some wonderful high-end bargains over the years.

So what’s this Beauty Week about then?

In celebration of the launch of the store’s online beauty department, Fenwick will be hosting a week-long event devoted to demonstrating the latest beauty looks, skin-care, and makeup.  There will be a range of complimentary treatments available as well as demonstrations and surprise treats.  I’ve outlined the happenings below:

Saturday September 28

  • Martin Carter, pro-celebrity make up artist for Stila
  • Bethany Burrill, make-up artist for Estee Lauder
  • Ferdinand Cadavid and Chantecaille’s national artists
  • 12-3pm meet Ray Burns, founder X-Ray fragrances
  • Meet Sotiris Lovaris, national make-up artist for Lancome

Sunday September 29

  • Carl Grownwald, fragrance consultant for Dior
  • A free mini polish from Nails Inc. when you buy their monogram manicure kit

Monday September 30

  • Meet Gun Novak, founder of FACE Stockholm
  • The Clarins Beauty angels descend
  • Meet the Cosmetics 27 beauty technician

Tuesday October 1

  • Meet Julien Azencott, co-founder of customized Codage skincare
  • Meet Noelle Herzog, MD for Karin Herzog
  • Meet Midori Fujiyama from Shu Uemura

Wednesday October 2

  • Meet Dominic Devetta, co-creator of Shay & Blue
  • Guerlain’s Make-up artist, also October 3
  • Andre Suard from Geilly Green demonstrates hair up-do’s

Thursday October 3

  • Meet Dr. Marko Lens, founder of Zelens.
  • 1-6pm, meet Flavien, founder of Touche by Flavien hair
  • Christopher Howells, national artist from Laura Mercier

Friday October 4

  • Fred Letailleur, YSL’s international make-up artist
  • Benoit Dumont, Nars’s international make-up artist
  • James Read, founder of James Read Tan
  • Meet Andrea Maack, founder of Andrea Maack fragrances
  • Jo Martin, national make-up artist for Paul & Joe
  • Christopher Howells, national artist for Laura Mercier

Saturday October 5

  • Nars, James Read, Paul & Joe, Andrea Maack and Laura Mercier
  • Tina Sogaard from Karin Herzog

Rather helpfully, no appointments are necessary… so if you find yourself in the area with a spare half hour, you’ll be welcomed at any event.  For further information and more details, you can follow @FenwickBondSt on Twitter or ring the store on: 020 7629 9161

Will you be popping by for your beauty fix?

Leighton Denny Temptation A/W 2013 Swatches and Win!

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 19 - 2013

They say that nail polish is the new lipstick in terms of what we’re spending our money on during these tough economic times.  Infact, for the first time ever…. nail polish sales look set to overtake those of lipstick by the end of the year.

And with brands releasing collections as beautiful as Leighton Denny’s new Temptation collection*, it’s not hard to understand why.

Leighton Denny Tempt Me

Tempt Me

Attention Seeker – Vibrant cherry red with added shimmer creating a deep and sophisticated, yet edgy look.

Hypnotic – A teal blue with an exquisite taffeta appearance.

Lilac Lust – A Lilac base tone with a hint of shimmer.

Mutual Attraction – Sophisticated smoky mauve with a burgundy shimmer touch.

Statement Maker – Emerald bejewelled green with a sprinkle on metallic sparkle for a unique shimmery Look

Tempt Me – A romantic dark purple with a metallic green undertone.

All six shades apply smoothly and easily in just two coats, not one of these needed a third.  A couple of them have a thinner-than-standard formula but most look practically opaque on the first coat.  I love this time of year for jewelled shades and Leighton Denny have embraced the season, giving us punters exactly what we want.  Neons for A/W?  Sorry Butter London… but you’re not speaking my language this time.

The stand-out shade, for me, from the Temptation collection is Mutual Attraction.  I called it a couple of weeks ago as my favourite A/W nail shade and now that I’ve seen it in person… it exceeds my expectations, the shimmer is glorious whilst remaining somehow understated.

If you want to stand the chance at winning the entire collection, the brilliant @URbeautique team are running a twitter competition.  To enter, simply tweet them a photo of your nails with the hashtag #UR_tweet2win – you can find their Twitter account here.  Competition closes on the 30th September, so hurry!

The Leighton Denny A/W 2013 collection is available to buy online at urbanretreat.co.uk, priced at £11 each.

Ten things you (probably) didn’t know about getting clean!

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 18 - 2013

It’s something that most of us take for granted.  ‘Aving a wash, getting a scrub, jumping in the bath!  Some of us do it every other day, most of us scrub up daily, and the super-fastidious among us do it even more often!  Some forget to scrub behind their ears and others don’t dry between their toes or in their belly-buttons properly!

What you think you don’t know about getting clean can be written on the back of a stamp, right?  Wrong.

Here’s ten things that I bet you didn’t know about bathing, washing, and general cleanliness!

1. Back in 2009 the world’s oldest woman passed away after slipping in her bath.  She was 130 and had just had the new bathroom installed to celebrate her old age!  Where’s Alanis Morisette when you need her?

2. The romans didn’t use soap, instead they rubbed olive oil onto their skin before scraping it off (along with any dirt) using a special scraper.  Sort of like a slave-operated windscreen wiper.

3. Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand is the largest hot spring in the world, covering an area of 38000 square metres with an average depth of 6 metres.  The hottest areas of the lake reach boiling point!

Frying_Pan_Lake_NZ

4. Think baths are less water-efficient than showers?  Not nowadays!  An average bath uses 80 litres of water whilst an eight-minute power shower uses around 136 litres.  If you’re really serious about saving water, you could always share!

5. In medieval Europe, the Church thought of bathing as an “excessive” indulgence and believed that such acts led to immorality, disease, and promiscuity!  In fact, so widespread were the fears of bathing contributing to ill-health that the daily bath (or shower) has only become a common occurrence during the past half century.  I’ll bet Sunday mass used to stink!

6. The average temperature of bath water in the UK is between 38c to 40c – that’s just a couple of degrees above the average body temperature.

water-drain

7. Every citizen of Kentucky, U.S.A is required by law to take a bath at least once a year.  Personally, I think we should introduce this globally.  Especially in London, in the Summer.  All tube stations should install stink-o-sensors as standard.

8. A lady called Charlotte Lee holds the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Rubber Duck collection at 1439 different ducks!

9. The Japanese take the business of cleanliness and bathing very seriously.  They even have an amusement park dedicated to the ritual with over 25 water attractions!  Visitors can choose between bathing in coffee, red wine, green tea, or even Sake!  I wonder what the penalties are for drinking the water?

4362670270_8938a965a7_b

10. In the UK, it is the law upon entering a bath to immediately submerge your head and enter the land of Mermaidia.  Particularly if you have long hair, in fact… if your hair is short, you should grow it immediately to let this occur.

Ok, I made that last one up… but damn… you used to do this as a kid ALL the time right?

Anyway, in celebration of my ten frankly mind-blowing facts about bathing, I wanted to introduce some of my favourite bathroom companions…

IMG_2513

From left to right:

Zirh Warrior Collection (£14.99).  When I discovered these were being discontinued, I snapped up a few bottles to keep me going.  Although aimed at men, I love the concentrated scent and divine lather.  There’s something rather brilliant about having a “collection” of commonly-used toiletries like this and Zirh capitalised on using great ancient leaders to appeal to our sense of smell and personality traits. Obviously, I’m Caesar.  OBVIOUSLY.

You can still buy the Zirh Warrior Collection on amazon.co.uk

Abahna White Grapefruit & May Chang (£17)*.  Abahna are all about the ritual of bathing, about turning an ordinary experience into an extra-ordinary occasion.  They’re definitely heading in the right direction with this beautifully citrusy number that perfectly marries the uplifting aromas of grapefruit with the energising zest of may chang.

Available to buy online from abahna.co.uk

Bodhi Rosemary Chi (£23)*. When your spirits are in need of a little reviving, Bodhi’s synergy of Rosemary, Geranium, Petitgrain and Cedarwood oils is just the ticket.  This bath and shower therapy is generously fragranced ensuring that both your mind and your senses are stimulated by the rich perfume.  For an added boost, combine your bathing ritual with their new Rosemary Chi Himalayan Detox Salt Scrub by using your hot bath waters to dissolve the salt scrub after application.  Genius.

Available to buy online from bodhi.uk.com

Kings & Queens Aztec King Vanilla & Pear (£3.33).  No Tesco shop is complete without adding to my Kings & Queens stockpile, I’m currently due another haul as I’m on my last bottle.  The sister brand of Korres have been inspired by ancient rulers from around the world to create a line of body products that delight both visually and during use.  My personal favourite is a toss-up between Tsar Peter Tobacco and Caspar Myrrh.

Available to buy online from tesco.com

What do you to make your bathing routine that little bit less ordinary?

Butter London Fruit Machine NOTD

Posted by Lipglossiping On September - 17 - 2013

When I was younger, I lived by the seaside… like, right on the seaside.  And whenever my Nan used to come for a holiday, she’d pick me up from school and walk me down to the arcades.  I must have spent summer after summer on the pier, playing the one-arm bandits with her.  Being the nice kind of Nan that she was, she’d feed the machine with money and let me sit on a stool beside her pulling the lever.

Fruit machines aren’t like that nowadays… instead, they’re high-tech, expertly programmed things that make a god-awful racket in the corner of a pub.  I say bring back the more genteel OXO ones… and limit people’s spends to 2p a go.  Them were the days (I remember when all this was fields etc. etc.)

Anyway, Butter London’s interpretation of a Fruit Machine, is like no fruit machine I’ve ever encountered.  Some of these names are a bit bloody random aren’t they?  What does pepto-pink have to do with anything?!

Butter-London-Fruit-Machine-web

Fruit Machine is a pale bubblegum pink with a bright white base that keeps this colour popping right off your fingernails! It looks a little chalky to me but in a mod-esque, edgy kinda way rather than a cheap nail polish kinda way.

The coverage is pretty thick but the formula, completely workable and I was done after two coats.  Fruit Machine is one of those happy Spring colours (hello Autumn!) that keeps your focus firmly on your fingertips.

Butter London Fruit Machine is priced at £11.95 and available to buy online from powderrooms.com
