Recreating a salon blow dry – the follow up!

Posted by Lipglossiping On November - 12 - 2010

Earlier in the week, I whined about my inability to recreate a salon blowdry in the comfort of my own home and many of you shared my woes.

We all agreed that this seemingly simple styling step made a HUGE difference to how our hair looks and feels and a couple of you were kind enough to share some ah-mazing tips that I’ll be sure to follow up in my own retarded way.

I wanted to share with you the highlights from our blow dry discussion but if you haven’t read it… I urge you to go check out the full post.  Some of those tips are fabulous and I can’t do them justice here.  Go on, you might learn something!

You lot are brilliant.  Have a great weekend! xx

I totally second the hot air brush! when I used to have layers it created a fab blow dry really really quickly. I can blow dry my hair myself (I trained in hairdressing), but I never bother really. when my hot air brush finally broke (the attachment clip area snapped) I was so sad, still haven’t replaced it but I should!

You want something sort of like this, but maybe a different brand (I’ve had bad luck with Nicky Clarke stylers and I’d personally try to go for more wattage and less attachments)-

I had to laugh at this, the reason no-one can recreate a salon blow dry at home is because we cannot remove our heads and set them on a plinth infront of us, which wouldn’t make sense because we would then have no eyes with which to see. What I mean is that you need to be doing it on someone else to recreate it….it’s been a long Friday. x

I tried the tip of hanging my head upside down and blow drying it till it’s mostly dry that way – paying close attention to always have the air blowing down my hair shaft, never up. it helped!!! I wasn’t as good as a salon blow out but it was much better than mine usually are. thanks for whoever gave that tip 🙂

  6. I have really thick, curly hair so I always have to use lots of smoothing products. I make sure to section my hair into 4 (sometimes 5 sections) and when I dry the front of my hair, I brush it towards the back of my head, not downwards, I’ve found that it’s much bouncier that way!

You guys are going to find my actions a little extreme but I decided to study cosmetology and all it’s branches including dermatology just because when I first came to the United States I told my aunt I needed to get my hair blow-dry at a salon. She took me to a salon and my hair is curly and all the stylist did was grab a flat brush and dry it with the blowdrier! I looked like I had been electrocuted! It was horrid and I had to pay for it! Another day my aunt suggested a beauty school since it would be cheaper to get a blow dry there and to my horror they began with the same technique as before. I had to stop a teacher and explain her I didn’t want my hair done with flat brush so she grabbed the round brush after my hair was all dry and proceeded to fix it! It was a frizzy hot mess. I come from Honduras the capital and most women go to the salon just for the blow dry and you get the best blow dry ever, depending on the size of the round brush they can make your hair straight, smooth big curls or voluminous waves! I explained to the teacher how they did it so she started me to go to school for it. At first it took me an hour to do my hair, now 35 min. It’s time consuming but you wouldn’t be able to tell my hair is curly .
The best way it works for me is blow-dry my hair when it’s still sort damp, towel dried. And grab it all in a pin and section as I go. I still can’t manage to do the curls and waves you can do with just the brush alone! But I can achieve the volume or lack there of it! I like it because my hair feels soft and well taken care of!
    Claudia 🙂
