I received an interesting press release yesterday that shows the results of a nationwide survey on fake tanning. It was conducted by YouTravel.com and I thought it was rather fun!
The regions most keen on their fake bake are the north-east and south-east of England, where renowned tanning capitals, Newcastle and Essex, can be found. A staggering 81% of respondents from the South East claimed to have applied their tans from a bottle this year!

Perhaps indicative of just how rubbish I am at fake tanning, my region (the South West) came out with lowest score on the glow-o-meter with just 46% of us bothering to get our glows on.
How did your part of the UK stack up? And what about you personally, are you a fake tan go-getter?
Well, I live in the South East and I can’t say I’m surprised by the results! Personally, I’ve never touched fake tan and I never will. I’ve made peace with the fact that I’m deathly pale 🙂
As a fellow SW person, I’m not surprised. I hate fake tans anyway, so I’m one of that percentage that never bother.
Honestly I think you should rejoice in the shade of your own skin, not try to change it to fit someone elses standards.
I’m from Liverpool and not surprised the NW is one of the highest, so many girls are orange here. I’ve tried it once, the smell was terrible and it came out patchy, I’m happy being pale 🙂
Yep, there’s nothing that screams ‘tourist’ down south like a big orange tan. But there’s nothing that screams ‘local’ like 25 years of sun worshipping and the consequential handbag-face.
Central Birmingham is where I’m from, and I guess that percentage is quite spot on, not a lot of people fake tan but you get some that totally over do it! Personally i dont fake tan that often becasue I am olive skinned anyway but in the winter I tend to do the bits that are on show when I’m going out 🙂

very interesting! I don’t use fake tan stuff either, but am unfortunately surrounded by orange women who do. They all insist I look sickly, but they don’t see that they look like a bunch of oompa loompas.
Yeah, I get really offended when some neon orange woman tells ME that I look ill! I know that a lot of people don’t go overboard with the fake tan, but when it’s done badly, it looks REALLY bad.
I’m in the SE (though originally from the Midlands), and I’m pale – and like being pale so that I actually try to look even paler when possible!
I’m in the SE & I do fake tan, but would like to point out that it’s not a case of everyone who fake tans, uses a whole bottle in one go!
There seems to be snobbery from pale people who don’t fake tan, thinking that if you do, then you must be some sort of chav?!
Lauren – I apologise if I came over sounding like that – I just like being pale because I personally look better like that (I have tried sun beds and fake tan in the dim and distant past, and even sun beds didn’t make me tan, so I’ve learnt to love pale).
Viv – I didn’t mean for my comment to be directed at you – just more of a general musing at fake tan snobbery 🙂
I’m so fair my ‘tan’ is most people’s ‘pasty’, so I don’t even bother with the idea of fake-tanning. I know I’ll look circus-peanut-orange no matter how quality the product; I can’t even use a bronzer without looking like I’ve been playing in clay!
