Red Lips Day 12 – Chanel Rouge Allure Laque in Coromandel

Posted by Lipglossiping On February - 9 - 2011

So impressed was I with Chanel Rouge Allure Laque in Dragon, I went out and bought Coromandel (£24) too.

I knew it was a risk, Coromandel is an orange-based red and I think it’s clear that I’m more suited to blue-based reds.

Still it will be interesting to see Coromandel in the swatch comparison lineup (week 2 is coming soon!)

We’re getting into Ronald McDonald territory aren’t we?  I think it’s a beautiful shade but for the purpose of learning more about reds and how different shades ‘react’ on different skin tones… are we in agreement that this isn’t the most flattering for such pink-toned skin as mine?

I mean… by all means, break the rules.  There is NOTHING to say that one shouldn’t rock a shade that isn’t classically correct for you.  Infact, I’d be willing to bet that some of the hawt-est chicks out there are rocking reds that POP off their lips precisely because they contrast so strikingly.  But in the interests of me being more your normal, everyday kinda girl – I think this one’s a fail.

As for the actual product.  It’s another Chanel beaut!  You can pretty much read my Dragon post and repeat the pros and cons of wear and quality for this one here.

I’m gonna do a high street red lip next… I’m getting a bit one-sided and high end centric here.  Red lips should be accessible for all right?!

What next?  Maybelline?  Rimmel?  Revlon?

I always end up looking like a clown when I wear read. I think your right Dragon looks much more striking on you xoxox

  2. Jen says:

It is quite orange. I hate rules but they do work sometimes.

    High St? Revlon, please.

  3. Leah says:

Ooh ooh be doooooo, I love this! I suit orangey reds.

  4. babyinacorner says:

    Yes Revlon lipsticks are great!

  5. Nicole says:

no no no – see I like it on you, however I feel it would work better if you ‘warmed’ up your face more – a smidge of bronzer, a smudge of warm brown shadow instead of the stark liquid liner, a flush of warm peach blush and the orange based reds would be just as perfect as the blue based ones on you

I was in a german drugstore the other day and i swatched Maybelline’s Superstay 18 Hour Wear in Red Passion and it is AMAZING! it stayed on my hand all day and the vibrant red is fantastic for a high street brand! I didn’t buy it as i didn;’t have enough money on me but I’d recoomend you true it if you’re still looking for a high st red 🙂 x

  7. Nicoline says:

I love this colour, but I think it would look terrible on me. Maybe for a costume party.

  8. Hannah says:

I actually don’t think it’s too bad on you. But as for drugstore brands I think Sleek would be worth a try, I love the pigmentation of their products!

I’m going to say something really cheesy now, are you ready? I use makeup not to look pretty, but to highlight my best feature: my personality. I think orange-reds look great on light-skinned, pink toned ladies such as yourself (&, coincidentally, myself as well), specifically because it’s an off-beat choice. I don’t think Ronald McDonald at all. More, Nylon Magazine model. My red lipstick collection consists of Russian Red, Cockney, and the infamous Lady Danger. Guess which one I think looks best? That being said… if you do feel uncomfortable in the shade you’re wearing, try layering Cockney on top (you have that one, right?). Sometimes I like to mix Cockney & Lady Danger for a red that’s a wee bit deeper, but still bright.

  10. Well, I’d say Revlon, but that could possibly be because I refuse to buy anything from Maybelline and Rimmel, so Revlon would be the only one out of those three I could consider buying xD

  11. Tamara says:

I didn’t think Ronald McDonald at all, in fact I was quite taken with it. I tend to lean more towards blue based reds myself (in love with Dragon), but you can surprised yourself when you step outside the box.

I echo the sentiment of pairing it with a slightly warmer face for more cohesion, but I feel it looks striking.. in the absolute best way. :]

  12. Why not try the one I was wearing the other day, I know it’s a gloss but it packs a punch with pigment? xx

  13. Imo says:

I like the less than a lippie more than a gloss kinda thing.

  14. elwingelfje says:

I think because you’re so pale, it’s harder for you to pull of a really bright lip color. And that limits the range of red that looks good, because it’s even more evident on you if a shade is not exactly right. I don’t think this is the best colour unfortunately 🙂

My current love is Mac Viva Glam VI (not the SE) but that’s more of a bronzey terracotta / brick color than a true red. Still a really pretty one though. I’d be really curious on how it’d look on you.

  15. Nina says:

    I think you look great!
Good drug store options: 17 Hot Chilli, Rimmel Alarm and Red Hot and Revlon’s Volcanic Red all have safe spots in my collection..

  16. Julia says:

Whoa, that’s a shocker, but hey, it looks nicely balanced with the minimal makeup surrounding it, good one…but I’m guessing it transfers like the plague?

  17. gemma says:

Rimmel – screamer & temptation are both nice solid reds I think would suit your skin as I’m probably paler and wear them all the time,

I’d love to see a review of a red stain though instead of a lipstick, lipsticks a pain I’d like to see something which would outlast drinking beer from a plastic cup for 3 hours and still be attached the next morning like the maxfactor lip stains [the name escapes me] but they’re still on and going the next day also maybelline superstay lipstains are very good.

Ooh yes I’d like to agree here- I’ve tried the red Max Factor stain, the one with the creamy colour which sets and then a nice clear balm for over the top. I couldn’t get on with it at all, but I’d be interested to see someone else’s views on it xx

  18. Patricia says:

I think in general we tend to have a feeling that orange-based lip colours are going to be harder to wear, and slide into a mindset that makes us prefer blue-based reds. The reality is that strong lip colours actually look nice on you, regardless of the undertone.

  19. redtiger21 says:

The shade reminds me of my Lady Danger, super hot! However I do agree, it doesn’t suit your skintone if you’re after a more naturally flattering look (though like some have said, nowt wrong with being striking). I personally have found that the most flattering red I have in my collection is actually True Red gloss from NYX, it’s stunning, and blue-based so would look fab on you too. Anyway, as for high street, I would say anything except Rimmel, as their lippies just don’t excite me, sorry to be awkward!

  20. Lillian says:

Oooh it’s so so pretty! I am desperate for this and Dragon, I think I might use my Advantage Card points on one 🙂

  21. amina says:

yes i have this nail polish and found it a little punchy though i do like it as a pedi colour – i actually think you carry it off though!
reviewed it on my blog if you’re interested

That’s a gorgeous color but I don’t think I could pull it off.

  23. […] CHANEL Rouge Allure Laque in #72 Coromandel is just fierce, period. The texture of Chanel’s range of Rouge Allure Laque are like melted lipstick in a tube with a doe foot applicator. It’s silky, creamy and has a subtle sheen like glosses do. They stay on longer than glosses and are very pigmented. Coromandel is loud and sharp – not for the faint hearted and there is a soft metallic quality to it – gorgeous. See how Charlotte rocked Coromandel here. […]
