Smashbox is a brand that just isn’t that easy for me to lay may hands on – sure, it’s in Debenhams but my local Debenhams is situated a 10 minute walk from the main shopping area, making it a bit of a black hole as a far as I’m concerned.
Smashbox Bionic Mascara in Jet Black is currently available at CheapSmells.com — who knows for how long, they have a pretty rapid stock turnover — and they sent me a sample to put to the test.
The mascara has a “wet” formula, something which I noticed immediately because I can never help but worry when buying from online cosmetic ‘discounters’ that I might be getting very old stock… and in the case of mascaras, old stock = dry mascara.
I needn’t have been concerned as the Smashbox Bionic Mascara I received is most definitely wet, any wetter and it would have been an instant fail, like the Bourjois 1001 which I hated until it began to dry out.
You can see from the before/after that the Smashbox Bionic Mascara (on the right!) offers decent lengthening if not much volumising. I like the inky black shade and the fact that it left my lashes feeling soft and flexible.
It’s not the showstopping mascara I’d have liked to see from Smashbox but it’s a better-than-natural daily mascara (I hate ‘natural’ mascaras) which won’t dry out any time soon and offers genuine single-sweep lash boosting. Maybe not for nights out on the tiles but a really, very good daily choice for work.
Smashbox Bionic Mascara in Jet Black is priced at £12.95 (a £16.50 value, 22% discount) and available from CheapSmells.com

The Southampton Debenhams is a bit of a pain lol. Theres rarely anyone on the Smashbox counter either! I only tend to venture in there for Urban Decay now. x
worked quite well..your lashes have more length and look more curled
My current fave is bareMinerals Flawless Definition curling mascara, totally amazing!
Oh! Beautiful- so clean! I love the “wet” mascaras when they don’t clump my lashes together like rail-road spikes. There’s no Smashbox retailer anywhere near me, but I get a similar effect with Maybelline Falsies (also wet), which I use sparingly (and have grown to love). It dries very quickly which helps. However, my go-to for past decade has been Maybelline Full & Soft (waterproof). Sin of sins, I wet my lashes before I apply it, and it goes on very smoothly, doesn’t clump and stays soft all day. It is a pain to remove though. 🙂
My favorite daily mascara is CoverGirl’s Lash Blast Length mascara. I don’t think you can purchase it in the UK, but I’ve heard Maxfactor make pretty similar dupes of CoverGirl mascaras, given that they’re both owned by P&G.
Ahh, your lashes look all long and fluttery! I agree with you, I do not like “natural” mascaras at all, especially if I’m wearing eyeshadow, it just doesn’t show up and looks like I’ve skipped the most importnant step! My fave daily mascara is currently Boots 17 Va Va Voom Volume mascara which I wear in brown, it genuinely looks lovely and even in brown show up amazing well.
It looks very lengthening. My go-to mascara at the moment is Boots No 7 360 Lash, but it’s about to run out so I’m on the look out for something with more WOW factor. Merry Chrimbo!
That is one of my top 5 mascaras, I bought countless tubes of it. I also like Maybelline’s Colossal which is quite similar and you could try Revlon’s Grow Luscious as it too is similar but gives a mean curl.
Funnily enough my ‘daily’ mascara is one from a discounter too – a Calvin Klein. It’s OK. Natural, black, non-clumping. I won’t bother re-purchasing though. It’s not a patch on the Boots No 7.
My daily mascara varies between Prestige’s My Biggest Lashes (which I am very upset has been dc’d from Boots), Maybelline’s Falsies and Barbara Daly’s mascara in the sliver tube.
You might ask why I have so many daily mascaras and I’m not quite sure why I have that many either..
