Sometimes I get a gut feeling about something and I can’t always pin it down and explain it to myself in a way that helps me unravel and make sense of it. This is one of those times.
The new Burberry Body ad (which premiered the other day on ITV1) features a very beautiful Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and a fitting, delicately-orchestrated track by The Feeling but… it’s leaving me a little conflicted.
Wanna see?
It’s beautiful isn’t it? The back-lighting, the photography, the way the material from the coat moves around her naked form. But, I don’t actually feel anything other than a bit of a perv after watching it.
I know that sex sells and it sells to both men and women regardless of sexual orientation but this is a strip-tease, with added come-hither eyes to the viewer (that’s me) and whilst I don’t object to the content of the ad – I’m just failing to see the relevance as the camera pans to her nethers. Infact, the only real connection my mind makes (as the bottle spins around provocatively) is that RHW is contemplating using it for something a bit inappropriate and I’m not entirely sure that this is what Burberry are trying to convey.
Perhaps I’m overthinking things and shouldn’t delve beyond the classic “if I buy your product, I’ll get a body like RHW” hook but in fairness, it’s Burberry’s fault because they’ve taken a bit of subtle “sex sells” and turned it into “if Harrods did Spearmint Rhino”.
What do you think of the new Burberry Body ad?
I agree, I thought it was super over the top. I was thinking about getting the perfume, because I loved the actual product, but seeing this kind of ad just honestly makes me go look for another perfume.
I don’t understand how this advert is supposed to make women want to go out and buy this perfume :/
Isn’t it designed to make men go out and buy it for women?
More of a “if I buy it, my girlfriend/wife will turn into RHW” hook.
🙂
I dont get it either.. its like an advert for her as a model and the perfume is just butting in!
I reach the same conclusion as you. The bottle is a “toy”.
Oh god, now that you’ve called it a ‘toy’…. I’ll never be able to look at it in the same way xx
Forget the ad! I love both the perfume and the spray body oil is HEAVEN!
I still can’t get past Daniella Westbrook in head to toe checks whenever I think of Burberry. Back to this advert…um, no. Don’t like it, think it’s tacky.
I am the same as Grace, Burberry makes me think of Westbrook, but I love this perfume even though it is totally not my usual type!
Completely agree! I think its the scene at 0:24 in the video- the lighting makes it look like wonky blinds in a dodgy hotel or something :S the focus on her ‘regions’ doesn’t help either. Not too sure about the scent- i think its just OK
I can see where they were going with the whole “rose gold” thing this season, but their model is too young and bratty to pull this off- she looks kinda silly- especially in that last shot. Now if they had used someone more elfish and let her wear some white under that trench, we might have a deal…
Ooh I say! Bit rude! Well I don’t think it’d go any way towards me either choosing or not choosing that perfume, although I could say the same for most perfume ads really, they bore me a bit as I find they bear little relation to the actual product! RHW is a very striking and pretty girl, but does anyone else think she looks just a teeeensy bit like Ivan Drago, the rival boxer in Rocky IV?!
She’s very lovely an’ all, but her lips remind me a little bit of a bum hole. I shouldn’t really have said that out loud, should I?! x
I love your blog and I’ve just started my own and I’m trying to get it out there. Please check it out! 🙂
