I’m having a bizarre relationship with this nail polish from the Urban Decay Summer of Love nail set… When I first saw Hashbury, I was a little bit in awe. In the bottle, it looks ah-mazing. Cadbury purple with masses of micro-shimmer…
Then I swatched it on one nail and couldn’t have been more disappointed. It was watery, sheer and jelly-like. It still is two of those things. After 3 coats, I can get a pretty opaque finish, though it still looks more jelly than cream. Nothing wrong with a jelly, but if you’re anticipating a nice opaque purple shimmer…. the effect is lessened with a jelly-ish finish. I like it more than I did, but still not as much as that initial WOW factor.
Final verdict – Could have, should have been great but isn’t.
I know I’m being a tad harsh, it’s still a rather lovely purple… and although the formula is terribly thin, 3 coats isn’t bad and it has the most beautiful high gloss finish.
Anyway, I’m all up in the air about this shade… I can’t decide. What do you ladies think?

Its gorgeous! The colour itself is pretty and it is very glossy!
You do make me terribly jealous when you do all these nail varnish posts – I have gels done so I trade the joys of different colours for not actually having to do anything with them and them still looking nice. Laziness wins over variety I guess!

I was going to put this colour on today, i tested it out last week on a nail – i did find it watery – i have a similar colour in the No7 range..and if i had to choose i’d go for the No7 version. This is coming from a person who loves Urban Decay more than any other brand!
I had the same disappointment with this polish, It looked so gorgeous in the bottle but it was so sheer, and I’m too lazy to put 3 coats 🙂
The solution: I’ve put China Glaze short and sassy as first coat and one coat of cashbury on it, and yes ! a nice intense colour with depth. I do it for any polish I find too sheer (eg: Nfu Oh 51) and the result is beautiful! every time.
I guess any darker shimmery reddish/purple color will do 😉
I like it though! I am going to go and get the set later hopefully if it’s in stock , hope you are feeling better babes x
I think that is a bit harsh. It looks great. Barry M Vivid Purple has the Cadbury thing going on. It’s not watery. The Barry M is a top polish.
this is a great shade..
no idea about the formula or if it’s a nightmare to apply but omg this is too gorgeous for words, woah!!!
I think it’s nice but it’s nothing unique. There are lots of other similar polishes out there which probably have formulae better than the one you’ve described.
@Sarah – Thank you x
@Jenni – I’m looking back through my recent reviews of the Summer of Love set and they’re getting harsher… I think I wanted to ADORE them all. And I’m just not… which is making me cross and possibly overly grumpy about them.
The problem I have with this one is that I can’t get it to look neat ‘cos of the thin formula. Along the cuticle edge, where I can’t get each coat to align…. so the opaque central part of the nail is gorgeous, but then it looks all scruffy at the cuticle where it goes patchy. I had BarryM vivid purple and I didn’t like the formula on that one either. But you’re so right about it being a cadbury purple!

Wow, I love this colour and I love the set it’s from! I need this 🙂
@cescils – great idea!
Hey Charlotte, it’s Sarah, Alison’s daughter. I L-O-V-E the colour. Was it the first time you used that particular bottle? Maybe it’s meant to be jelly-ish. I am about to try out crackle nai varnish. Maybe you could do a review on that? I am growing out my nails to try out some of the nail polish you have looked at. I am SO happy you looked at my blog!! I love it. I’m working on a REALLY special entry for you. I L-O-V-E your blog, it is uh-maz-ing!! 😀 🙂 🙂 😉 😉
Hi Sarah!
It’s a proper Dairy Milk purple isn’t it? (mmmm chocolate!) – If you like this one, you might like BarryM Vivid Purple which is quite simillar. I think you’re right and that this is meant to be a jelly finish but I think I prefer opaque finishes because my nails are a bit yellow from wearing too much nail polish! Yay from growing out your nail, it’s lovely to have a little bit of nail to paint. I keep mine shorter now than I used to and think I’ve finally found the right length for me!
Oh, I’m excited about your blog post – let me know when it’s up and I’ll head right over there!
xxx 😀
Hi Charlotte, crackle nail varnish went great! I have finished your entry (I’m a really quick typer) and I have edited it so it sounds good, and it is all ready for you to read! I hope you like it. If I have done something wrong, please tell me and I will fix it right away. I will try the BarryM Vivid Purple! Thank you for the suggestion. Purple rocks, right?? I love it!
